    2. Heather - I think that the proper name for this street is 'Hill Terrace", that was what my mother told me, however it has generally been known as 'Dan's Castle'. My mother, grandparents and an uncle lived there and my mother always told me that the name was derived from a man called Dan who lived in some form of shanty at one end of the street. Newrick Grant, in 'memories of Tow Law' says: "The history of Dan's Castle has puzzled many residents, and strangers as to how it derived its nams.
