Robin, Do you have Fred's birth registration in Scotland ? The England-born children seem to have been registered timeously in appropriate Registration Districts. Maybe Fred thought he had been born in Felton, whereas it was his younger siblings who were ! On C1891 (page ref 647-151-1) there is a Scotland-born Fred Gardener, aged 19, in the Royal Engineers ? On the 1901 census in Gateshead ( 4758-97-31) wife Henrietta is recorded as aged 35. Is this nearly 20 years younger than her "real" age ? Michael Dixon

Yes thanks and the other three children born there on two different farms. > The England-born children seem to have been registered timeously in > appropriate Registration Districts. That's right Carlisle, South Shields, then Felton and finally Newcastle > On C1891 (page ref 647-151-1) there is a Scotland-born Fred Gardener, aged > 19, in the Royal Engineers ? Then in 1911 she is 57 instead of 64. Husband James filled in the 1911 Census form saying he was 58 instead of 62. They had clearly fallen on hard times after 1881 so who knows what effect it had on them. Robin
