Because the National Archives who hold the copyright on the information waive that copyright as far as transcripts are concerned on condition that (a) the copy is accurate and (b) we uniquely identify the source of the transcript. The census reference ensures we comply with (b). In the case of the 1911 census schedules we need: Class No RG14 Piece No (PN) Registration District (RD) Registration Sub District (SD) Enumeration District (ED) Schedule No (SN) All of which are printed on the page on the FindMyPast site which displays the census schedules. eg RG14PN30017 RD552 SD1 ED25 SN55 NB The RG78 number is not essential.
