Hello Heather, Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you for your comments and suggestions. It so helps to know the geography of the place as I had no idea about Dunstan (except that he/it was a saint . . wasn't he?). I remember a while back you checked the MI's of Whickham for this little girl for me and didn't find anything then, so maybe I will give Christ Church in Dunstan a go. Of course they might have been too poor to be able to afford a headstone, but I was kind of hoping . . . The rest of the family were still going strong as at the 1901 Census, it just seems sad that this particular branch was afflicted with the deaths of two small children and I wondered if there was perhaps an epidemic of something going on at the time. And there was such a large gap between the two oldest children, that it also seems possible there might have been others born, lived and died between census'. I couldn't find this family at all on the 1861 Census and they should be there as William ARMSTRONG married Elenor ROBSON on the 25th of July, 1858, at Newcastle Upon Tyne, and my g-grandfather, George William ARMSTRONG was born the 12th of May 1860, also at Newcastle. He lived til he was 82, dying in Victoria, BC, on the 13th of January 1942, the 13th anniversary of the date of death of his wife. It is very strange that many members of your family follow pretty much the same migration pattern as members of mine. It's almost hard to believe they didn't know each other. Best wishes, and thanks again for the info, Trudi Barr, British Columbia, Canada.
Hi Trudi Yes Dunstan was a saint - but this is DUNSTON - now a suburb of Gateshead, but at that time part of the parish of Whickham. I would look in the "new" Bishop's Transcripts on line for the date when the child died, and I would start with Whickham. Dunston Christ Church was not built until 1872 - I haven't checked, but the burials for that church should be in there too. Note we are talking about burials - not gravestones.
