Can anyone tell me what 'Nc' stands for in Robinson Lane-Nc And Saint Georges-Nc, Sunderland? I'm guessing at 'non-conformist'. Thanks. Vivienne, Toronto

Vivienne Presumably that's an LDS abbreviation and I presume it means non-conformist. As a general rule, I think it's safer to completely ignore LDS classifications and use alternative sources because the LDS is often very confused and confusing on such matters. St George's, Sunderland (originally Robinson's Lane) was a Presbyterian Church, now it is St George's United Reformed Church and is located on Belvedere Road, Sunderland. The congregation dates back some 250 years and has occupied the present grand building, which is of Dumfries red sandstone and is Grade II listed, since 1890. http://www.panoramio.com/photo/14903057 As with many churches these days, it has merged with other former congregations whose buildings have closed - and it's full title is currently "St George's with Trinity & St James". Just to complicate matters further, St George's now forms a joint congregation with Stockton Road United Reformed Church (aka West Park) which is also listed, and they use the two buildings on alternate Sundays. Another sign of the times is that neither St George's itself nor the joint congregation with West Park have a minister of their own - there is a single minister serving several URC churches which make up the "Sunderland and Boldon Partnership".
