Although not actually within the old parish of Bedlington, and therefore not in what used to be called Bedlingtonshire, it is near enough for the family to have moved from Bedlingtonshire to Newsham at around the time of the birth and for there to have been some confusion as to whether or not he had been born in Bedlingtonshire. Bedlingtonshire was a detached part of Co Durham until the mid-1840s, since when it has been part of Northumberland. Geoff Nicholson
Thank you all so much for your help with this. Still not sure which option to plump for yet, but am learning more about Durham/Northumberland geography and history all the time! I can see how both Belford and Bedlington could get transcribed into Bedfordshire ... Newsham near Blyth (and Bedlington) is very close to Bill Quay and Gateshead where I can place the family. However, I am quite convinced by the baptism in Ellingham which would lead me to Mousen near Belford. Perhaps both are right! maybe Andrew was born in Newsham, but one or both of the parents came from Mousen which is why he was baptised at Ellingham. I guess it would be easy to mishear one for the other ...
