The boundary between the Norman baronies of Bywell and Styford - and probably their Saxon predecessors - passed through what became the village. St Andrews served one barony (Styford) and St Peters the other. It appears that the village grew around the churches, not vice versa, and there's no evidence that I know of that it was ever any bigger than it was at the beginning of the nineteenth century. At that time, 1801, the population of Bywell Township - Bywell village plus a considerable hinterland - was only 199. That's roughly half of the population in exactly the same area in modern times - the most recent figure I have is from the 1961 census when the population was 419. Can anyone help find Frederick James GADNER in the censuses from 1891 onwards? He was born in Dumfriesshire in1873 and appears in the 1881 Census in Felton with his parents as Theodore! After that we have not found him in censuses under either name in England or Scotland. Had given up hopes until he reappeared as the informant for his fathe's death in Gateshead in 1923 The certificate has ... Informant Fred.J.Gardner, son, 7,Stephen Street Byker, Newcastle Upon Tyne His parents were in Gateshead in 1901 and 1911 and both died at 67 Wylam Street Gateshead (his mother in 1921) Robin
