All George Fothergill was appointed Harbour Master (or Quaymaster) of Newcastle in April 1809 and was still serving in the post on 11.10.1828 (according to the Newcastle Courant) I believe he may be my 5 x gt grandfather but there is the possibility that he may be his son. My George Fothergill was baptised 1.11.1747 All Saints and was a 'mariner' when he married Elizabeth Forster 19.5.1771 at Tanfield and also on the birth of his children 1772-1782 at least One of his sons was also named George (baptised 3.7.1774 All Saints). Did his wife Elizabeth die shortly after 1782 as the 'supply of children' ceases after only 10 years. My question is which one was more likley to be the 'Harbour master'? My gtx5 grandfather would have been 62 in April 1809 and his son would only have been 35 but in 1828 they would have been 81 and 54 respectively Are there any records as to when he was succeeded in the post? Many thanks Mike Fairless
