Alan: Have you found the name to be Oldfield? My Spanish Teacher Edna Oldfield Whitson lived in Summititiville, Madison County, INdiana. I have been researching this rather uncommon surname for some years and have managed to identify most of the main lines, but am sadly lacking much detailed information regarding dates of birth, marriage and burials in the two counties. Most of my direct family seem to have lived in and around Jarrow, Gateshead and South Shields and followed various occupations, including tailor, ship steward, lamplighter (gas, I imagine!) and one who worked in a wooden wall board factory (plywood, at the turn of the century?). There are also some links with areas about Longbenton,NBL,including Killingworth and Shiremoor. Another main line of OFIELDs seem to have congregated around Sedgefield,DUR, but I hsve yet to make any connection between these groups. The name, which is certainly not of nothern origin and appears to have some roots in midland and eastern counties, is occasionally spelt OFFIELD and I have one poor family going through life lumped with the tag "OFFAL".
