Huge apologies for not responding promptly to the mails from Brian and Geoff regarding my query "address of convenience". I had to go out of town and had no access to e-mail for a few days. I'm sorry if my query was not clearly laid out, Geoff, but my thanks to both you and Brian for your input. Brian hit the nail on the head - "although the couples were married and supposedly resident in Newcastle, their previous and subsequent children were born elsewhere. Suggesting that their residence was elsewhere and they'd just temporarily moved to Newcastle to marry." All four couples were almost certainly resident in Cambois or Blyth, from other evidence such as census returns and the birthplaces of their children, so it was a mystery why they would marry in Newcastle unless "the couple had lied about their marital status and all their friends and neighbours thought they were married when they weren't. They couldn't marry locally without revealing the lie, " I had wondered myself whether that was the reason, especially as they lied on 1911 census about how long they had been married and one couple reckoned they were wed in Manchester, which was clearly a porky pie. This lot specialised in telling whoppers in many cases such as age at date of marriage, census etc etc. Peversely, they are also some of the most interesting. Thank you again for the help. All that mattered were "appearances" - truth, apparently, mattered not one jot. And it wasn't confined to the past - it happens today too as I often find when interviewing relatives. To many, rewriting history seems to come as naturally as breathing. And it's not just scandals which are covered up, sometimes ridiculous, trivial things - like the fact that hubby was younger than his bride - are lied about just as avidly as one might lie about uncle Jack being a cat burglar. The moral is: whatever the source, documentary or anecdotal it matters not, you must check everything. Our relatives lie to us - our ancestors lied to vicars, registrars and enumerators. Every "factoid" should have have two, preferably three, completely independent and different sources. It seems like overkill but in the face of frequent deliberate efforts to distort the truth, it is important.
