We are steadily finding out more about Alice May GARDNER but can find no trace of her in 1891. Can anyone suggest a new way to search for her? In 1891 her family are scattered with the eldest three in Newcastle but her younger 4 siblings are in Reformatories (sisters in Darlington and Sunderland) and care homes. We've searched 1891 Census indexes with variants of her surname and for her using either Christian name and no surname with no sighting. I've looked at the images for work houses in Gateshead, Newcastle and no sightings. Part of the challenge is that this family inconsistent with names, ages and place of birth. Alice May Gardner was born in 1885 in Newcastle upon Tyne and appears with her parents in Gateshead in the 1901 Census at 3 Cobden Terrace Gateshead ( RG13/4758 Folio 97 page 31) ... Here her parents have given wildly wrong ages and variant information is a characteristic of this family. By 1911 Alice is married to John LANNEN and living with 3 children in Grosvenor Road Gateshead ( RG14-30-4-21-30421_0851_03). BUT none of the children appear in the BMD indexes! At least two more children are born ... Patrick in 1912 (birth is registered ) and Elizabeth in 1914 whose birth was registered in 1929! There may be a son Edward born in1919 but we have found no birth registration and he thought his father was Patrick. Robin
