    1. [NMB] Place of Birth ?
    2. Brian Pears
    3. Hi I'm having difficulty interpreting a place of birth on the 1851 census. The entry is HO107/2397 Folio 437 Page 8 Schedule 27 and the unreadable DOB is that of Mary Ann Speakman aged 10. It reads "???????, Wales". We can't get any clues from other censuses as they give this person's place of birth at various places in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. I've put an image of the relevant text temporarily at: http://www.bpears.org.uk/temp/cawthorne.jpg Can anyone please offer any ideas about the place in Wales? 3. Hi Brian Quite a few places beginning with "Nant" in my atlas, but of course this could be a tiny place not on the usual maps. The ones I've come across don't really fit, but here goes: Nantperis, Nant-y-moel, Nanternis, Nantgaredig, Nantglyn, Nantgarw (Cardiff), Nantmel, Nantmor, Nantgwyn. 3. Brian,   Nantgwyn, Powys looks pretty close.    Perhaps one of the Welsh lists might be of help.   Happy Trails,   Raymond.

    3. Hi Brian, That 1851 census birth place in Wales look like it might begin Nanti----, or perhaps Nanty----- There are a lot of places in Wales that begin Nanty & Nant Y as you no doubt know. I found on this page a list of places in Wales that contains many place names beginning Nant----, you may find something near to what is given in the 1851 entry here. It is from the National Gazeteer of Wales. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/geogdata/ngw/n.htm I suspect that the enumerator had trouble copying that place name from the schedule onto his folio and what you have is his best guess. Regards Jenny DeAngelis Spain. <<> I'm having difficulty interpreting a place of birth on the 1851 > census.
