Hello List I wonder if anyone could give me some advice as to how to access electoral rolls for the 1920s and 30s. I have an Arthur Johnson (born 1896) who was living at 31 Charlotte Street, Stanley, Durham at least up until 1927. I wrote several months ago to the local Stanley library but received no answer. Does Gateshead Library hold these electorals rolls as well, and would it be worth while contacting them? There were three surviving sons in this large family, and while I have been able to find marriages for the sisters, the sons have eluded me. I am interesting in finding out whether Arthur married, as so far I have been able to find any likely marriages on Free BMD, and thought the electoral rolls might hold the answer. I am also having difficulty finding a death for his mother, Elizabeth Johnson, born 1852, who had died before the 1911 census. We have a photo of her which was taken probably in the early 1900s, maybe around 1905, so her death would have been after that. There are no deaths for an Elizabeth Johnson listed for the Lanchester district (which covers West Stanley) in that period, nor any of the right age around that area as far as I can see. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks Jeanette Heath Melbourne

Jeanette Gateshead Library does not hold electoral rolls covering Stanley. The only repository holding them will be Durham Record Office, so I suggest you contact them.
