Robin: According to my 1919 25-inch map of central Gateshead, Carrick Street ran westwards from near the north end of Hector Street. much of its north side was taken up with a school, with an adjacent "hall", but the rest of the north side and all the south side was housing. As I understand it, the site was in the notorious "Barn Close" area, notorious because it had been the site of a very old quarry, from which the stone of which most of central Gateshead was built had been taken. When the quarry became disused, probably several centuries ago, it became the receptacle for all the town's rubbish. Once that rubbish reached street level the site was used for housing. Of course, the land was unstable and ill-drained so the foundations settled and cracked, the houses became damp and rats were attracted by all the waste underlying the buildings. No matter what was done any housing built in that district rapidly became slums. The solution was only implemented in the 1970s. The whole site was cleared and the old quarry was also cleared out, in the name of creating a "cut and cover" Metro station for Gateshead. Nowadays the rather spacious Metro station is underground and the surface is occupied by the main Gateshead bus station. There is no trace left of Carrick Street. I'm sorry I have no idea who (or what) Carrick was. Possibly some 19th century councillor, or else a speculative builder. Perhaps someone else knows. Geoff Nicholson

Was Mulgrave Terrace a 'better ' address? Robin
