Hello, I'm new to this list and new to genealogy in the North East, and I need a bit of help. Is anyone studying a branch of the LAKE family in Newcastle or in Northumberland as a whole? I'm researching all those LAKE branches which appear to have originated in Devon (the other main county for LAKE origins being Norfolk). From Devon, they spread to many of the English counties, including as far north as Yorkshire, Lancashire and Westmorland, as well as to Wales, Channel Islands, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. But I'm now looking at a family which moved INTO Devon in the late 18th/early 19th century from Newcastle upon Tyne, and I'm trying to find out if their origins were in the north or whether their ancestors had once lived in Devon and the descendents were now returning. Anthony Procter LAKE, son of William Samuel LAKE and Phoebe, was baptized 26 Feb 1784 at All Saints, Newcastle. He bacame a surgeon, I think with the Royal Navy. He married Elizabeth [surname unknown], who was also from Newcastle. At least two of their children (Mary Phoebe and Eliza) were born in Cornwall and their son William Charles was born at Teignmouth, Devon, in 1825. In 1841, the family was living at Teignmouth, where Anthony died in 1843. William Charles became a GP, married a Teignmouth girl, and raised at least 11 children in the town. Anthony's father, William Samuel LAKE, was the son of William Lake and was baptized 14 Jul 1755 at St John's, Newcastle. He had a brother named Proctor Lake (baptized 21 Feb 1759), but I don't know where this name Proctor comes from. I've looked at all the IGI entries for LAKEs in Newcastle, and I have some other possible siblings for William Samuel and Proctor, but I have not been able to identifiy their father William. If these names are familiar to anyone on this list, I would love to hear from you. And if anyone knows of any link between the LAKEs of Northumberland and Devon, please do get in touch.
