Hello, This is my first posting to the list and my first foray into genealogy research in Northumberland so please be patient with me! I am researching my GG Grandfather, John Hindmarch. According to the England census records I have found on ancestry.com, he was born in North Shields in abt. 1818. He married Margaret Thornton in 1842 in Tynemouth. I believe they moved to Durham before 1848 since their first child, Matthew, was born in St. Giles, Durham. I am trying to verify that the marriage information I have is correct (and to locate the exact date and place). I am also trying to verify that I have the correct parents for John's parents: John Hindmarch/Hymers, b. 30 Sep 1784, Wallsend, Northumberland; may have d. in Kentucky, USA; and Ann Boyde b. 29 Sep 1781, Ainwick, Northumberland. John & Ann supposedly married 23 May 1806 at Christ Church, Tynemouth. Since I am new to researching in the U.K., I don't know the best way to approach this research. I would appreciate any information that someone on this list might already have about the Hindmarch family plus some education about the sources I should be searching. Thank you in advance. Kind regards, Betty in Arizona USA
Betty, The free BMD site (freebmd.org.uk) gives the marriage of John Hindmarsh and Margaret Thornton as the Sept quarter of 1842 in the Tynemouth registration district. Look on the site to see which parishes make up the district. Use this info on the site below This gives access to many of the Bishops Transcript records for many parishes in Northumberland. They are not indexed but with patience you may be able to verify dates and places for baptisms, marriages and deaths. http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/ Hope you find what you are looking for. Hi Betty I hope you enjoy your Northumberland and Co. Durham research. Here are a few suggestions to get you started: www.freebmd.org.uk is a project run by volunteers to transcribe the civil registration indices for England and Wales. This gives us the following index reference: Marriages September Quarter 1842 HINDMARCH John Tynemouth volume 25 page 325 THORNTON Margaret Tynemouth volume 25 page 325 You can use this reference to purchase the marriage certificate from the UK General Register Office on line http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ The fees are 9 pounds 25 pence per certificate including postage. www.genuki.org.uk has lots of useful links and some marriage and other indexes for Northumberland and Co. Durham. A transcription of the 1881 census is available free at www.familysearch.org The census years (1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 & 1901) are available on a range of pay sites - just google for UK census. Some images of Bishops' Transcripts for some years and some events in Northumberland are available on-line (for free). These are for Church of England events, so you may need to look elsewhere (for baptisms in particular) if your families belonged to a non-conformist congregation (e.g. Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist etc). If you go to the website www.familysearch.org & click on the search tab, you can choose the search tab and then record search pilot. Choose 'Browse our record collection' in small print in the middle of the page. Click on the map that comes up & choose the Bishops' Transcripts under UK. Select the County & Parish you want. http://communities.northumberland.gov.uk/ is another great site.
