Dee I forgot to mention that the crew member of Hampden L4072 who was uninjured was Observer P/O J.M.D. Irvine. Perhaps I could also mention that Sgt Reid, a crew member from one of the bombers which was shot down into the sea off Northumberland on 21 December 1939, was involved in another "friendly fire" incident less than three months later. In the second incident, his Hudson was shot down by Hurricanes of 32 Squadron. Sgt Reid, who baled out, was the only survivor but he was badly burned and spent 4 months in hospital.
