Hi All: The picture of Corsenside Church on Genuki fits almost perfectly with my recollection of the place I visited all those years ago. The size and age of the building seems just about right, and it's certainly located in the correct area. Close to a river too (the River Rede, or Reed, as some would have it) and on a decent road just off (Roman) Dere Street. The only problem I have with it is that the site seems far too tidy. Of course, when I visited, the Second World War had just ended, a lot of buildings had been neglected, if not abandoned, and labour and materials were thin on the ground. Or maybe the cleaners were just having a bad day! All the signposts had been taken down and placenames painted out, cars were as scarce as moon buggies and the few people who lived in the area seemed to have been abducted by aliens. I found my way about with a Boy Scout compass and a page torn from a school atlas. Today's locals will probably kill me for this, but what a lovely, fascinating part of the county this is to visit. It's thick with history covering thousands of years, from pre-Roman sites to long-gone industrial developments; the countryside ranges from the ultra-gentle going of the valleys to the wild harshness (and dangers) of the fells. Just remember to shut the gates. Now, where are that old lady and the pirate resting? Alan Fletcher Hill Hamilton,NZ
