My father in law commenced his five year apprenticeship as a ship's draughtsman at the age of fifteen at Swan Hunter and Wigham Richardson Ltd, on 2nd. September 1918 and was lucky in that he was kept on as a journeyman for one year before losing his job due to lack of work. His reference dated 17th, September 1924 says " it is only through slackness of work that we are compelled to dispense with his services" At this time my father who served a five year apprenticeship as a maintenance electrician was also 'given his cards' due to lack of work. Both were fortunate to obtained work after this, one at Parsons, Heaton Works and the other at Hawthorn Leslie's shipyard at Hebburn. Mildred Robson
Thank you Mildred My father was apprenticed as a boilermaker in the early 1930's but was laid off as soon as he finished. He retrained in the building trade at Wallsend Stadium and came down to Lincolnshire to work on the airfields in preparation for WW2. You are lucky to have records. My family threw everything away!
