    3. An apprenticeship would have to be paid for and, given the relationship with his family, this route is unlikely. However, he would have required a Seaman's Ticket, not he record of which would show whether he did serve as an apprentice. Not all seamen did, and "learned the ropes" the hard way. 3. A baptism entry usually mentions only the parents and the child. Occasionally, especially with RC records, though sometimes with others too, particularly modern ones, the Godparents will also be named (patrinus and matrina in RC Latin registers). There are not normally "witnesses" at baptisms - unless it is a Quaker one, where the whole congregation may be listed as witnesses. 3. No doubt this is not relevant, but I have a friend who is related to the original Slater who founded the firm in the mid-19th century. They were originally based near the foot of St Thomas' Street and hired out (horse-drawn) wedding and funeral coaches, Later, via a marriage with a Potts, they became the Slater and Potts who had a coffee house in the town centre, The original Slater was a corn miller on Windmill Hills in Gateshead and off Forth Street, Newcastle, and John Falconar Slater the "Waterproof Artist" of Cullercoats, to whom a blue plaque was erected just a couple of years ago, was also of that family. This company was owned William Slater & Co. Ltd. Now Tyne Taxis I remember this company, and if I remember correctly had an office in Waterloo Place, or maybe Pink Lane. I believe they were bought out, but do not know by who or who the previous owner was. I sure Tyne Taxis were gone in the early 1970s. I have checked Business Directories 1894, 1921, 1936 & 1938 for Newcastle upon Tyne taxi cabs and only Slater's were mentioned. And no Tyne or a Talbot was mentioned as a taxi cab proprietor. I suggest you check out later business directories in Newcastle Central Library. To see when Tyne Taxis started up. -- John Gallon (Volunteer & Mentor at TWAS) Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne little.blobby2@btinternet.com https://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~littleblobby/ https://www.freewebs.com/littleblobby/
