    1. [NMB] John WHITFIELD Leasingthorn Co. durham
    2. Jenny De Angelis via
    3. I wonder if anyone can tell me where the parish of Leasingthorn is within County Durham. I have this place name as the abode of a John WHITFIELD dated 1720 but can't find such a place name on the Genuki pages for Co. Durham. Maybe the spelling of the place name has changed or the place has disappeared or swallowed up into another more prominent place. I am trying to piece together the Whitfield family of Norton and Stockton and where they may have come from before arriving in these places. Grateful for any help Regards Jenny DeAngelis

    2. Geoff Nicholson via
    3. Jenny: I'm not sure whether Leasingthorne ever became - or is - a Church of England ecclesiastical parish in its own right, but in 1720 it definitely was not. At that time there were really only the old "ancient" parishes in existence - that is, those existing in 1600. Very few new parishes were created until the mid-19th century, when industrialisation created concentrations of population in places which even the Church of England could not ignore. Other denominations, such as the various Connexions of the Methodists, were much quicker in catering for those places and the typical 19th century pit village, for instance, probably had a Wesleyan Methodist Church at one end and a Primitive Methodist one at the other, with the nearest C of E Parish Church a mile or two away! Of course, there are such things as Civil Parishes, but they began, on the whole, as the old Townships and it was the changes in the Poor Laws in the 1830s which really brought them into existence as important entities - they are the fore-runners of the Council Wards of today and have no ecclesiastical significance. William Brownlee married Elizabeth Cowell in 1897. He was described at that time as a Seaman. However by 1911 he was a Confectioner and living at 106 HIgh Street, Wallsend. In 1931 Elizabeth died in 65 Bedford Street, I know that end of Bedford Street has a lot of shops, with flats above them.

    1. [NMB] RICHARDSON/CRESSEY
    2. Helen via
    3. Hi, Is anyone researching Martha RICHARDSON daughter of William RICHARDSON? She married William Ramsay CRESSEY on 29 July 1856 at St Peter Monkwearmouth, according to familysearch.org This gives her father as William RICHARDSON and the groom as a widower , son of William CRESSEY. I have the marriage between William CRESSEY & Mary RAMSAY Jarrow 1817. William R. CRESSEY possibly had a first wife Mary? My interest is because I believe Martha was a witness to her niece's wedding (Margaret RICHARDSON to William F. THOMPSON Bp Auckland July 1846). This ties her into the family of William & Dorothy RICHARDSON of Bp. Auckland, as I think Martha had a sister Mary who was the mother of Margaret RICHARDSON. I know that Margaret RICHARDSON was likely to be illegitimate as her marriage certificate gives her father as Robert MOORE, and census gives her birth around 1828 at either Bp.Auckland or Darlington. It also looks like Martha also had a child out of wedlock - Annie - born around 1847 Bp. Auckland, as she is with the CRESSEY family in 1871 & 81. I would be interested if anyone can find me details of Annie in 1851. I have the CRESSEY family in 1871 and 1881 in Yorkshire, but it looks like they were in the London area around 1860 when Martha Ramsay CRESSEY was born. I have not found them in 1861 yet. William R. CRESSEY was an engine smith according to the 1881 census. Thanks, -- Helen Oram

    3. Some members may be interested in images of the decree in William Lord Widderington [Widdrington] Baron of Blenckey and Jane Lady Widderington his wife v Robert Ellison and Robert Jemson, dated 1712, which are available at http://aalt.law.uh.edu/AALT7/C78/C78no1367/IMG_0189.htm . This relates back to a mortgage made in 1659 of 3/8 of the manor of Winlaton, coal mines etc by William Hodshon, grandfather of Lady Widdrington (nee Tempest), and while the content relates principally to the significant landowners, there are descriptions of the manor, and also names some of the tenants. Hi Gwyneth Edwin's daughters were well known here in Gateshead, Ruth Dodds even has a Wikipedia article which mentions her father as being "bookbinder and historian Edwin Dodds". The article is wrong in one respect, Edwin had four daughters, not three. It also fails to mention Edwin's principal occupation: Printer Another daughter, Madelaine Hope Dodds, was a noted historian: http://www.sclews.me.uk/m-dodds.html Home House, Low Fell, which is now a home for unmarried mothers, has a blue plaque commemorating the three famous sisters http://www.bpears.org.uk/Misc/Gateshead_Plaques/#DoddsSisters http://www.flickr.com/photos/75930102@N06/7266734016/ The unmentioned fourth sister was Mary Muriel Dodds, and there was also a son, Brian Mawson Dodds, who followed his father into the printing industry. 3. Just a wild shot in the dark. I have an Edwin Frederick Dobson Dodd born 1888 in Sunderland. Worked as ship's steward per the 1911 census and his attestation, and as a cook per his seaman's ID card. In my experience, few people can spell Dodd. Only four letters and 75% D, but infinite ways to get it wrong, esp pluralizing.
