John - I think that you are referring to 'Ward's End' not 'World's End'. As far as I can remember it is about half way along the A68 between Inkerman and High Stoop. I seem to remember an old map showing this name for the High House Farm which is along the road from High Stoop going towards Satley but I have never been able to establish that this farm was called Ward'd End.. Regarding the castle that you mention Newrick Grant says in his book (his notes were written the 1940s when he was in his 80s) : "There used to exist near Tow Law an ancient cottage better known as Cobley Castle. It was situated on the high hill adjoining Old Hedley Colliery and is now demolished. It was supposed to be an old shepherds hut." Hi everyone, I too had wondered about the name Dan's Castle. I think there's a pub of that name too on the A68 as you leave Tow Law and approach Inkerman. My father also called that area Worlds End as his father had. Does anyone else recall that name?? I have seen Worlds End marked on a map in a book that a friend had and again I've wondered where this name came from too. While we chat about Tow Law I also have a query about another building there which my ancestor Nicholas Moralee was born in. It is marked on old maps and was called Copy Castle or Coby Castle but appears to have gone now. I think it may have been an ancient building and wondered if anyone knows of any photos of it. Heather - the name of the man should have read 'Dan Oglanby'. My apologies. Alan Vickers. Forget the rest, get the best - http://www.tiscali.co.uk/music
Heather - I think that the proper name for this street is 'Hill Terrace", that was what my mother told me, however it has generally been known as 'Dan's Castle'. My mother, grandparents and an uncle lived there and my mother always told me that the name was derived from a man called Dan who lived in some form of shanty at one end of the street. Newrick Grant, in 'memories of Tow Law' says: "The history of Dan's Castle has puzzled many residents, and strangers as to how it derived its nams. Dan's Castle was derived from a man named Dan Oglangy who lived in an ancient cottage at the top of Dan's Castle." Alan Vickers. Forget the rest, get the best - http://www.tiscali.co.uk/music

If you tell us what locality you are interested in we might be able to provide more information. I applied for and obtained the record of my father's admission in 1901 to the Shotley Bridge Children's Home from the Durham Record Office several years ago. The information gave date of admission, age, religion, to which cottage they were allocated and nearest of kin. I also found a photo of the homes on http://isee.gateshead.gov.uk Subject headings appear to be children and almshouses and memorial housing. Interestingly, my father was apprenticed from Shotley Bridge Home to a local saddler who seems to have obtained many of his apprentices from this instituation. In a diary entry of around 1910, he writes of going to Shotley Bridge to choose another apprentice. I'm sure there were many cases where admission to the home opened up many possibilities that would have otherwise been denied these youngsters. Jeanette Heath

Thank you Michael. Is the church at Cowpen still standing? I remember the St Bedes in Bedlington at Catholic Row. If I remember correctly you actually walked down into it. Last time I was at Church in Bedlington was 2002 at my Great Aunts funeral and it was a new modern church. I can't even find any pictures of the old church which is a shame. Thanks for your help. It's really appreciated.
