    3. Hello I am looking for the marriage of Thomas Aittis to a Mary I know so far that he was born c.1812 in Sunderland, and she was born c1813 in Washington, Durham I have found them on freecen in 1861 living in Penshaw/Painshaw, Houghton le Spring, with several children (Thomas and Mary are still here in 1881 - with no children) children include a Mary Ann Aittis c1840, who marries George Snowball in 1861 The eldest child on the 1861 census record is a Thomas J born c 1838, so I expect they married not much before this (but possibly as early as 1820, I guess ...) Any help greatly appreciated, Mary's maiden name would be lovely ... Christel Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com

    2. Carol Ann Logan
    3. Dear Listers I know that this is the Northumbria list but recent postings seem to have included Co. Durham so I hope you will not mind me asking for help on the following. The family mentioned did end up living in Newcastle by 1915. I have tried many times to trace Thomas ARMSTRONG, Mary WEAVER and daughter Alice Ann WEAVER on 1871 census but still cannot find them. I’ve tried searching for each of the 3 names in full, by surname only giving year & place of birth, by first name only with place of birth etc. None of the usual methods has turned up anything. 1843-4 Thomas ARMSTRONG was born in Stockton 1850 Mary WEAVER was born at Great Grimsby 4 Dec 1868 my great grandmother, Alice Ann WEAVER, was born at Cape House, Carlton, DUR. No father’s name shown, mother Mary WEAVER 25 July 1870 Mary WEAVER married Thomas ARMSTRONG at Sunderland Registry office by certificate. Address for both parties given as Vane Tce, New Hendon, Bishopwearmouth. Thomas was at that time working as a Screwer in an engine fitting shop. 1871 they are all unnacounted for 21st Jan 1880 Alice Ann is baptised as Alice Ann ARMSTRONG in Great Grimsby 1881 they are living at Wolviston RG11/4893 F 97 p 2. Thomas is described as a farmer of 175 acres 1891 they are living at Stobbart Hotel, Escomb RG12/4068 Folio 199 pg 6 with Thomas as Innkeeper 1901 they are living at Spoor’s Buildings, Escomb RG13/4645 Folio ? Pg 18 and Thomas is a General Labourer 1911 they are at Woodside, Witton Park RG14PN29714 RG78PN1721 RD547 SD1 ED12 SN415 Thomas is a farm labourer Any help gratefully received. 1. [NMB] Constance Edith GARDNER 1891
    2. Another of our challenging GARDNER family Can anyone help find Constance Edith GARDNER in the 1891 Census? She was born in Carlisle in Jan to Mar 1875 and we have found her with parents in Felton in 1881. She married John Grainger in Newcastle in 1893 and they are in Benwell in 1901. She dies in Gateshead in 1902. I've tried searching both ancestry and findmypast online across variants of surname with no success She is one of several members of the family of James Amory GARDNER( b Alnwick 1848) and Henrietta Jane (born Alnwick 1846) who we have not yet found in 1891 .... We've not found the parents either. Some of the children are scattered in Homes for Waifs and strays etc. Robin

    1. Re: [NMB] Constance Edith GARDNER 1891
    2. Robin, I notice that on both FreeBMD site and Newcastle Register Office site, Carlisle-born Constance Edith's marraige is registered as Edith. Also on 1901 census ( 4777-96-7) both her and her Felton-born brother Charles are recorded as Newcastle-born. So.... a candidate for Constance Edith on 1891 census.... In Westgate area of Newcastle (like Benwell on west side of Newcastle) there is a 16 yr old Edith, servant, but recorded as born North Shields (4191-49-26) ? Michael Dixon

Is there another parish that they are listed under or are they just not on the list at familysearch. labs yet? I am looking for Jacksons around 1770 to about 1840. Mention of "parish records" and "the list at familysearch" together probably means you are seeking the BTs. As has been said before (many times) that list is still only in the "Beta" stage and so is (a) incomplete and (b) quite possibly inaccurate. The "Official" way to find what is where as far as parish registers - but not other parish records - are concerned remains the use of the Society of Genealogists "National Index of Parish Registers", of which Volume XI, Part 2 covers Northumberland and Co Durham. The latest version is the 2nd edition (1984) by C P Neat, revised by D G Mason. That source tells us that Ellingham parish registers, baps 1695-1971, baps of Dissenters (such as are noted in the parish register) 1751-1806, marriages 1695-1835 and burials 1695-1871 are held in Northumberland County Record Office (Woodhorn). Copies of baptisms and burials 1695-1819, with notes of the baptisms of dissenters 1751-1806 and marriages 1695-1804 are held in Newcastle Central Library (ie the H M Wood transcripts), with microfilms of those copies in Salt Lake City. The Society of Genealogists have copies of the same transcripts, although their marriages go up to 1814. The marriages 1695-1814 are included in Boyd's Marriage Index and the Banns 1754-1814 are in Boyd's "Miscellaneous" volume. The marriages 1813-1837 were included in the second volume of Alan Readdie's index to all north Northumberland marriages for that period (now absorbed into the NDFHS index for the whole of Northumberland) and the baptisms 1695-1812 are on the IGI. The BTs cover 1764-1842, with gaps, and are held by Durham University - in 1984 that was in the Department of Palaeography and Diplomatic but now it is in the University Library, Archives and Special Collections. OK, that was written before the days of the internet, but it has an authority that another stage of transcription, such as when records are put "on-line" can never have. The National Index then goes on to give similar, though slightly shorter, accounts of the registers of Ellingham RC church (outside date 1781-1840: some being with the priest of Seahouses RC) and of Ellingham (Linkhall) Methodist New Connexion Church, of which all there is to say is that it was founded by 1795 and was in the Alnwick Circuit. If your Jacksons prove elusive be sure to bear in mind the possibility that, living as close to the Border as they did, they might have been descended from Scottish immigrants and so the first generation after the immigration (at least) would probably have been Presbyterians, with all that implies for where their CMB might be found. Then in 1911 she is 57 instead of 64. Husband James filled in the 1911 Census form saying he was 58 instead of 62. They had clearly fallen on hard times after 1881 so who knows what effect it had on them. Robin
