    1. [NMB] Andrew Reed c1815
    2. Christel Muncaster
    3. Hello I am trying to work out the place of birth of Andrew Reed c 1815. I found him on freecen in 1861, living in Trimdon, with wife Sarah (nee Storey, married 1838) and children - birthplace transcribed as Moussion, Bedfordshire In 1881 he described as being born in Mewsome, Northumberland Neither of these places make sense to me, any ideas? I have found a couple of his children on IGI christened in Roman Catholic churches 1) Ann 1850 (my GG grandmother) at St Mary's, Newcastle (she was born in Gateshead) 2) John 1852 at St Joseph's, Gateshead I wondered whether the father was Catholic and if either of these were likely to be him ... how can I tell either way ...? do any of these help placing the birthplace? 1) ANDREA REED Male Birth: 17 OCT 1813 Christening: 18 OCT 1813 Roman Catholic, Ellingham, Northumberland, England Father: JOANNIS REED Mother: JANAE LAWSON 2) ANDREUS REID Male Birth: 16 AUG 1816 Christening: 01 SEP 1816 Roman Catholic, Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland, England Father: ANDREI REID Mother: ISABELLAE HALL I hope I have provided enough information. Many thanks for your time, Christel Muncaster

    1. [NMB] Elizabeth Falcus. Who was her father?
    2. Fairless, Michael
    3. I am hoping that someone can perhaps help me identify the following Elizabeth Falcus. I have checked the Bishops Transcripts for All Saints (page numbers are given below as references if anyone wants to look at the actual transcript) but I think my main hope lies in finding out from any subsequent records, the date of birth of Elizabeth (perhaps her age when she died as Elizabeth Patterson?). As can be seen from the notes she seems rather confused about who her father was and his occupation ! Elizabeth FALCUS married Matthew PATTERSON 20.9.1803 All Saints (Bishops pg 179) On the baptism record of their first son (Bishops pg.248), the record states Thomas Patterson 11.10.1804 13.01.1805 All Saints, first son of Matthew Patterson 'yeoman' of this chapelry by his wife, Elizabeth daughter of Thomas Falcus, cordwainer of Gateshead On the baptism record of their first daughter (Bishops pg.388), the record states Elizabeth Patterson 11.12.1806 11.01.1807 All Saints, first daughter son of Matthew Patterson 'cartman' of this chapelry by his wife, Elizabeth daughter of William Falcus, soldier of Gateshead On the baptism record of their second daughter (Bishops pg.538), the record states Isabella Patterson 29.09.1809 25.12.1809 All Saints, second daughter of Matthew Patterson 'labourer' of this parish by his wife, Elizabeth daughter of [blank] Falcus, soldier of Gateshead On the baptism record of their second son (Bishops pg.695), the record states Matthew Patterson 04.09.1812 29.11.1812 All Saints, second son of Matthew Patterson 'cartman' of this parish by his wife, Elizabeth daughter of Edward Falcus, soldier of Gateshead The only one I can get close to is Elizabeth bapt 1.2.1779 Gateshead daughter of Ed. Falcus although Thomas bapt 12.5.1765 son of John Falcus (a cordwainer) and Sarah Swan could be a candidate as could his brother William bapt 24.5.1767 (occupation not know) but I have no marriage details for either Thomas or William.. Certainly an Edward Falcus was a 'soldier' for about 33 years at 1803 and his wife was believed to be an Elizabeth Joly. Many thanks Mike Fairless

    1. [NMB] Bedlington marriage
    2. Fairless, Michael
    3. All I have some scribbled pencil notes which I am now unsure of and hope soemone can check the validity of them for me It concerns the marriage of Frances Curry to Thomas Falcus 17.1.1781 at Bedlington. My notes suggest that he was of the parish of Morpeth and that witnesses to the marriage were Edm Burton/Barton and John Swann. A couple of questions: could the witnesses be Eden Burton and was John Swann an official and did he have a daughter Elizabeth Swan who may have married an Eden Falcus 22.6.1789 Jarrow? Also I now believe that Thomas Falcus MAY have married for a second time to Margaret Young 20.2.1787 in Jarrow. If so there must surely be a death for his first wife Frances Falcus (nee Curry). Can anyone find this death? I would be grateful for any snippets of inforamtion relating to the above Many thanks Mike Fairless

    1. [NMB] My Brick Wall
    2. Susan Mackenzie-Park
    3. I would like to revisit my brick wall to see if anyone can help. I am trying to find out about William Stephens. He was born 1857 in South Shields, Northumberland. I think I have him on the 61, 71 and 91 and 1901 census but not the 81. He was a merchant seaman and is named on the birth certificate of my grandfather as his father. His mother was Victoria Mary Wilkinson and she styled herself Mrs Stephens but I can find no record of them ever having married. Their son, Robert Consort Stephens, was born in 1903 and his mother married James Hetherington in Jun 1905. In the 1911 census he is living with his Wilkinson grandparents and Victoria is with her new husband and family elsewhere. I would like to know whether or not William ever married and if so whom as he is my maternal G Grandfather but I have hit a brick wall. I asssume that he was at sea on the night of the 1881 census but who knows. His parents - I think - were Thomas & Sarah but that is something I have not yet been able to substantiate. Susan

Why specifically Russia? Yes, a lot of North East rail workers helped build Russia's rail network, but they helped build rail networks all over the world. The North-East's unique expertise in mining and electrical generation/transmission was (and indeed still is) utilized world-wide too. A relation of mine, an ordinary lead miner from Allendale, found his expertise in great demand and in his twenties he was appointed manager of a gold mine near Ballarat in Victoria. A cousin of mine from Co Durham is the latest of a long line of engineers from his company who travels the world to supervise the installation of generating equipment. His brother is currently based in Hong Kong as representative of a local engineering company. There was nothing unique about Russia as a likely destination of North-East workers. Perhaps we should generalise your suggestion to something like - if you fail to find a relation on the IGI in the UK, don't forget that the IGI covers over countries too. 1. [NMB] Free BMD Transcribing?
    2. KEMSLEY, Robert N. G.
    3. Just curios; I've gained much from "FREE BMD" and wonder if there is any transcribing taking place for the Northumberland, Tyne & Wear and Durham Counties for "FREE BMD"? I've been researching for my beloved in St. Agnes, Cornwall and have been very pleasantly amazed at the volume of information freely available by way of Birth, Baptisms, Marriage & Deaths and also Census and Church Records on "FREE BMD" and it seems almost complete? It would seem to me that the above mentioned Counties are not as well covered by "FREE BMD"? I've visited the Transcribing area on "FREE BMD", but it gives no indication of what areas are currently being transcribed? Kindest Regards; Robert KEMSLEY Australia

Robert As FreeBMD is based on the GRO indexes which are national in scope, it is absolutely impossible for FreeBMD to transcribe by region and, of course, it is absolutely impossible for one region to be "not as well covered" as others. Certain names ranges might be better covered than others and certain quarters might be better covered than others - but all areas of the country are equally well served. If you have queries about the operation of FreeBMD then I suggest you join one of the FreeBMD Mailing Lists and ask there. 3. I may have provided this reference from a transcript. Thomas is "of Morpeth". The witness may well be Eden Falcus. The final letter(s) are a squiggle. There is a burial entry in the Bedlington transcript for Sept (3?) 1781 "Frances, wife of Thomas Fawcuss, Choppington". John Swann witnesses a number of marriages at this time and could well have been the parish clerk. 3. Hi Nivard, I have been aware for some time about Freereg, but I've never worked out how you can access their information, to see the actual baptisms, marriages and burials. Perhaps its a case that I am overlooking something? Vivienne Presumably that's an LDS abbreviation and I presume it means non-conformist. As a general rule, I think it's safer to completely ignore LDS classifications and use alternative sources because the LDS is often very confused and confusing on such matters. St George's, Sunderland (originally Robinson's Lane) was a Presbyterian Church, now it is St George's United Reformed Church and is located on Belvedere Road, Sunderland. The congregation dates back some 250 years and has occupied the present grand building, which is of Dumfries red sandstone and is Grade II listed, since 1890. http://www.panoramio.com/photo/14903057 As with many churches these days, it has merged with other former congregations whose buildings have closed - and it's full title is currently "St George's with Trinity & St James". Just to complicate matters further, St George's now forms a joint congregation with Stockton Road United Reformed Church (aka West Park) which is also listed, and they use the two buildings on alternate Sundays. Another sign of the times is that neither St George's itself nor the joint congregation with West Park have a minister of their own - there is a single minister serving several URC churches which make up the "Sunderland and Boldon Partnership". 3. Hi Robert It seems there is some confusion between freebmd and freereg Freebmd deals with the transcription of the GRO only (the indexes of births, marriages and deaths under civil registration, 1837 on) Freereg deals with transcriptions of Parish Registers (baptisms, marriages and burials) Cornwall is particularly well blessed with the amount of information available For Northumberland coverage see :- http://www.freereg.org.uk/parishes/nbl.htm And Durham here :- http://www.freereg.org.uk/parishes/dur.htm However there may be transcriptions available that do not appear on Freereg For starters try a search on google for the place name of interest and the word Genuki Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) PS , there is Freecen also for the transcribing of the census > Just curios; > > I've gained much from "FREE BMD" and wonder if there is any > transcribing > taking place for the Northumberland, Tyne & Wear and Durham Counties for > "FREE BMD"? > > I've been researching for my beloved in St. Agnes, Cornwall and have > been very pleasantly amazed at the volume of information freely available > by > way of Birth, Baptisms, Marriage & Deaths and also Census and Church > Records > on "FREE BMD" and it seems almost complete?

    1. Re: [NMB] Free BMD Transcribing?
    2. Robert, My comments below refer only to civil registrations of births, marriages and deaths indexed on the FreeBMD website. On the web site I myself deal most frequently with the Registration District once called Tynemouth. Transcription is currently taking place. Roughly speaking Marriages are now up to 1940s, Births and Deaths up to 1930s. It seems not to be an "exact science" as progress varies from surname to surname. But about a year ago transcription had only reached early 1920s.So it is moving along. Michael Dixon
