Peter It clearly is "Pollock" on the image of that schedule, so it is definitely a transcription error. I've reported the error, so they will look again at the image, and if they agree with the correction they will change it. All you'll find listed are people who were qualified to vote - and at that date it was men owning or lodging in property worth at least 10 pounds per year. 1. [NMB] Walker/Hebburn Ferry 2nd W.W. collision
    2. Mildred Robson
    3. Dear Listers, Can anyone shed light on the following story. Sometime in the early years of World War Two, I think in either 1940 or 1941, there was a collision on the Tyne between a Royal Navy warship, possibly a destroyer, at night ,with the ferry which operated between Walker ferry landing and Hebburn. The ferry was carrying workmen from Hawthorn Leslie's shipyard, who had to abandon the sinking ship and climb up rigging, let down over the warship's side, to the safety of the deck. My father said he took off his boots and slung them round his neck so he could climb faster. I was 'evacuated' at the time this event took place, which I think was reported on the national wireless 9 o'clock news. Can anyone pin a date on this event so that I can start to look through local papers for more detail? Regards, Mildred Robson

    3. Kevin Old Berwick, Holy Trinity is C of E, not Catholic, and was a disused ruin for much of the 18th century and well into the 19th when it was restored. St Paul's at Alnwick didn't become Roman Catholic until 1982 and it didn't exist at all in the period of interest to Jack. It was opened in 1846. The Roman Catholic church in Bailiffgate which you mention was St Mary's and is was indeed open in the mid 18th century, though no records are extant before the 1790s. St Mary Immaculate at Whittingham dates from the 19th century, so is too recent for Jack. There was a Catholic chapel at nearby Callaly Castle at the time of interest to Jack, but again no records are extant before the 1790s. 3. Can anyone advise about specific ship building/repair records in Jarrow in 1877? My grandfather and eight siblings were all born in Dundee 1876-1892 and the family moved to Newcastle in about 1895. My great grandfather John Ogilvie Liddell was a shipwright /ship's carpenter who apparently travelled widely (hearsay several times round Cape Horn), but until now I have not found any records. I have this week received the death certificate for the firstborn in this family, Isabella, who was born in Dundee in Nov 1876, but died of pneumonia in Jarrow at the age of four months in Mar 1877. The address was 6 Frederick Street, Jarrow, and her father was present at the death. I would like to find out why they were there at this time, how long they would have stayed and would this journey have been typical? Can anyone suggest a research route please? Kath

Kath: Your first stop when seeking any records of any Tyneside industry should be Tyne and Wear Archives, Blandford House, Blandford Square, Newcastle upon Tyne. Their web-site has a catalogue of their holdings. The main yard in Jarrow would be Palmer's but youcould also look for anything from Redheads and, indeed a ny other with Jarrow, Hebburn, Tyne Dock or South Shields as their address Geoff Nicholson

    3. Hi Jack, In my earlier message I told you that the LDS library catalogue has films for Ellingham, you quoted Ellingham in your message below. Since then it has been mentioned that Shipley comes into, or is very close to, Eglingham, note spelling difference. The LDS library catalogue has various listings for the PRs of Eglingham CofE parish church, you might find the baptisms, including those for people who lived in Shipley perhaps. With having the first name Ignatius perhaps the family were Roman Catholic and therefore very likely baptised their children in that faith rather than in a CofE church. If this is the case then maybe other listers can direct you to the nearest RC church to Shipley/Eglingham so that you can search the LDS library catalogue for those RC records to see if they are on any LDS films. Regards Jenny DeAngelis Spain. <<Hello all I was wondering if any one has access to Parish records before 1766 for Ellingham or Shipley , or Belford, If I am write Ignatius Main lived there and he and his wife had several children there before 1766 LDS records start about 1777 to late for me. I would be grateful for any help>>

    1. [NMB] ROBSON - Sunderland, Gateshead, Newcastle on Tyne
    2. Janice Peasnell
    3. Hello Listers, I am researching a line of the ROBSON family who lived in the Sunderland area of Co. Durham and later moved to Carr Hill, Heworth, Gateshead via Newcastle on Tyne. Ralph ROBSON married Ann CONSTANTINE on 16 Apr 1843 in Monkwearmouth. I believe that Ann was born in Langcliffe on 19 Aug 1821 (IGI) the daughter of William CONSTANTINE and Ellen REDMAYNE. (IGI has her born in Giggleswick) she is also recorded as coming from Settle in C71. Ralph is possibly the Ralph ROBSON born in Bishopwearmouth on 19 Oct 1808 parents Ralph ROBSON and Sarah ANTHONY. (IGI) He was recorded as a widower on their marriage certificate. The family of Ralph and first wife: Sarah ROBSON bn. about 1833. IGI has a Sarah ROBSON born on 24 Feb 1833 the daughter of Ralph ROBSON and Mary HOLMES who were married on 13 Dec 1829 in Sunderland. In the 1851 census a Sarah is living with the family of Ralph and Ann ROBSON in Carr Hill, Heworth. Children of Ralph and Ann ROBSON: Margaret ROBSON bn abt 1841 Detford (C51) Eleanor ROBSON bn abt 1844 Detford (C51) Ellen bn Sunderland (C61) Frances ROBSON bn abt 1847 Newcastle on Tyne (C51), Sunderland (C61) I think Frances married Charles WALKER in abt 1870. Mary ROBSON bn abt 1850 Gateshead (C51) Mary married George OLIVER in abt 1870 Elizabeth ROBSON bn abt 1850 Heworth (C61) Isabella ROBSON Bn 26 Sep 1854 in Carr Hill, Gateshead. The family were recorded as living in Park Street Gateshead at the time. Isabella married William John BROWN on 13 Apr 1874 in Heworth. William T. ROBSON bn abt 1857 Heworth (C61) William was living with sister Mary Oliver at 5 Romulus Street, Gateshead in 1881 (C81) Margaret A. ROBSON bn abt 1860 Heworth (C61) Mary J. ROBSON bn abt 1866 Heworth (71) Ann is recorded as a widow in the 1871C. Ralph possibly died in 1866 (I am still to check the death record on this) I realise that ROBSON is a very common name in the North of England but hope that someone may have turned up something on this line. Thank you all, Kind regards Jan Peasnell/Melbourne/Oz

That for Ralph reads (ex-H M Wood transcript): Ralph Robson, (birth) 19 Oct, (baptism) 20 Nov, 4th son of Ralph Robson, bottlemaker, N[ative] of South Shields, by his wife Sarah, late Anthony, N[ative] of Sunderland. No doubt a little search in the registers of Bishopwearmouth and/or South Shields, aided perhaps by the IGI, would reveal Ralph's three elder brothers and possibly other siblings. Geoff Nicholson
