If the standard of the handwriting makes it possible, then I wonder whether what you have read as "Wilton" could perhaps have really been"Witton"? In that case, although I don't know of any "Wittonforth " etc, I have to say that there are several Wittons in the NE. Two that come readily to mind are Witton le Wear in Co Durham (where the A68 road, always a major route north, crosses the Wear and so a possible "Witton Ford") and Witton (location of Witton Tower"), just south of Rothbury, from which it is separated by the River Coquet. Unfortunately, at both Witton and Rothbury there is an ancient bridge, though both must have been preceded by fords if we go far enough back! There are also Longwitton and Netherwitton in central Northumberland. Geoff Nicholson

I understand "forth" means "ford" in modern language, but this hasn't helped much either! Put me out of my misery! Chris

    3. Presumably J.W.Davison's wife remarried to a Sands before the information re his death was recorded. Therefore, find the marriage of D.A. Davison, Widow,to Sands and check that her father is the same name and occupation as on the marriage certificate when D.A. ?? married J. W. Davison. Hopefully this will give you the confirmation you need, provided you have the full birth certificates of the two people you mention with father and mother's names on. Mildred, >From edition number 48782 of The Times, Monday 25th Nov 1940 " Tyne Ferry in Collision A ferry boat on which about 150 workers were travelling between Walker and Hebburn-on-the-Tyne was in collision with a tug on Saturady Morning. The ferry boat was badly damaged and two men were thrown into the river but were rescued. The ferry was beached and another boat took off the passengers. Fourteen workers received injuries and were treated at a shipyard ambulance station. Four of the injured were taken to the Infirmary but were discharged later. After the passengers had been disembarked the ferry boat sank " ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- A previous article in the Times of 19th Jan 1939 announced that Hawthorn Leslie and Co were to withdraw a ferry which had operated for over 70 years between Walker and Hebburn. Seemingly originally for workers, public passengers had been allowed to use. So firm was removing ferry for public, but were to provide ferry for workers only. Michael Dixon

Phyllis ----- Original Message ---- From: Alan Hill <alan.hill@clear.net.nz> To: northumbria@rootsweb.com Sent: Tue, October 13, 2009 4:43:04 PM Subject: [NMB] OFIELD Families Hi everyone: I'd be most grateful to receive any help or firm information available with regard to OFIELD families in Durham and Northumberland from the late 1800s to the present day. I have been researching this rather uncommon surname for some years and have managed to identify most of the main lines, but am sadly lacking much detailed information regarding dates of birth, marriage and burials in the two counties. Most of my direct family seem to have lived in and around Jarrow, Gateshead and South Shields and followed various occupations, including tailor, ship steward, lamplighter (gas, I imagine!) and one who worked in a wooden wall board factory (plywood, at the turn of the century?). There are also some links with areas about Longbenton,NBL,including Killingworth and Shiremoor. Another main line of OFIELDs seem to have congregated around Sedgefield,DUR, but I hsve yet to make any connection between these groups. The name, which is certainly not of nothern origin and appears to have some roots in midland and eastern counties, is occasionally spelt OFFIELD and I have one poor family going through life lumped with the tag "OFFAL". 2. I see he is listed on the CWGC sight which has links to images of that cemetery. http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=205730 However I did not find him in the WWI Medal Rolls on the National Archives site ( nor on ancestry) which seems odd. Hope others can find his medals entry which could have more information. The full CWGC entry clarifies that D A Sands was formerly Davison so presumable remarried after his death. So both marriages may well be on freebmd. Robin
