    3. To all who gave me information about Hathery Burn, many thanks. As I found it named in the Whitley chapel parish registers, I have discounted the Stanhope one. The Hexham High Quarter one seems the correct one. Thanks again for all the interesting tidbits and map references given by listers. 1. [NMB] area around Chatton -Humble
    2. My ancestor Robert Humble b 1764, was born at Chatton Quarry House and his father also lived at Chatton Draw Kill House, Linkylaw and Brownrigg. I can't find Draw Kill House but have been to see the other three properties which still exist. Does anyone have any idea where Draw Kill House may have been? The other properties are fairly remote, do I presume that Robert's father was a tenant sheep farmer or "hired hand"? He was born nearer to Bamburgh and Robert himself became a master tailor ( according to later parish records when his children were born). Thankyou.

    2. Mike Kendall
    3. DISREGARD my earlier request for specific photos of a burial site at Elswick cemetery until I have further details. Having looked through e-mails from five years ago, it appears there is nothing to photograph for Isaac Kendall as the family didn't purchase the expired plot. Therefore when the rights expired after 14 years the grave was reused for an unrelated burial. I just learned Isaac's wife preceded him by 22 years and I'm sure the history is the same regarding her grave number; I should receive a reply from the Council this week. THANKS for your patience as I get organized in this area. Mike On Nov 20, 2009, at 2:55 PM, Mike Kendall wrote: Looking for a volunteer to visit and photograph a site for me. 2. Gen, In my neck of the woods ( Horton Parish) we had a country lane that got called both Hathery and Heathery. The Northumberland farm and parish database lists a place called Heatheryburn within the High Quarter township, in the southern part of Hexham parish. Whitley parish was a southern neighbour of Hexham parish. And I think Whitley parish was originally a chapel of ease out of Hexham parish. On modern-day maps ( e.g. Google maps etc) a spot called Heatheryburn lies close to Steel in the area south of Hexham. Michael

Gen: Since my first "top of my head" response to this query, I have had a look at my microfiche copy of the New County History of Northumberland, Vol 4 (Hexhamshire, part 2, edited by John Crawford Hodgson, 1897). Heathery Burn is mentioned on pages 71 and 73, as follows. Page 71: The other small farmsteads in the High Quarter are ...... Heathery burn (on an affluent of the Boldon burn), which gives its name to the most remote of the three stinted pastures of the shire ..... . Page 71 (footnote): For Wester-meadows, West Field-nook and Heathery burn, Lord Crewe's trustees in 1800 received an allotment of freehold lands and 19 2/3 stints on the stinted pastures. Page 73: (Hexhamshire and Allendale Commons): The pastures belonging to Hexhamshire are three in number, and though not contained within them are common to the West, the Middle, and the High Quarter. They are: The Eshells Moor, of 2,355 acres ..... The Lillswood Moor of 2,103 acres .....The Heathery burn Moor of 450 acres, at the extreme south of the shire, with an elevation of 1,250 feet; with the Green cleugh,, the Heathery burn, and the Beldon burn, an affluent of the river Derwent." This may confuse you even more, but with a good map (eg the 1st edition OS 6" or better) you should be able to identify roughly where it was. Geoff Nicholson

The best-known Heathery Burn is in Stanhope parish (Weardale) and it is usually referred to in connection with the discovery of a cave there which had been home to some prehistoric families - I won't comment as to whether they could have been your ancestors! 1. Re: [NMB] Access limitations to BMD and other data
    2. Brian Pears
    3. Mike This is somewhat off-topic for the list, but I'll briefly summarize the position with respect to BMD certificates. First, by law, information from BMD registers can only be provided in the form of a certificate. Nobody is allowed to tell you anything from a register "over the counter" or by phone. Second, again, by law, anyone is entitled to obtain any BMD certificate no matter how recent. The only restrictions are in ordering certificates online from the GRO for events less than 50 years ago - where you need to supply a lot of details before the online application will be accepted. However you can almost always still obtain these recent certificates without knowing all the details if you apply to the GRO by phone, or if you apply to a local office in person. The only other restriction with respect to BMD certificates relates to indexes for very recent events. For events up to to 2005/2006 BMD indexes are available in numerous libraries and archives nationwide, indeed worldwide. They were also sold to commercial firms who have made these indexes available online. Since then the GRO has refused to sell the indexes to anyone. They have put these very recent indexes in a very limited number of venues - the nearest to here being Manchester. Clearly this isn't a very satisfactory situation, but it's all we've got. Maybe things will improve, maybe not, we'll just have to wait and see. You can still get certificates for these recent events by applying to the GRO or local offices, but you can only see indexes at the very limited number of venues. Other data - well as you know, census data is restricted for 100 years, but for everything else, contact the repository and ask. Some other types of record are generally restricted for 100 years, some for 30 years - but there are no laws and little consistency. Some archives are very restrictive, others less so - so ask. Now, as I said, this isn't a local topic so it isn't suitable for discussion on the list. So this thread is closed. 2. Mike Kendall
    3. Hello list! This is my first post in some time and need to be refreshed on the current limitations imposed on BMD records and other possible data able to be obtained from local government offices. I know the 1911 census is the most current so I believe we're a little under the 100 year rule with this latest edition. Are there other limitations to protect the living when looking up BMD information? Can the offices in Newcastle provide information over the counter before requesting GRO certificates? 1. [NMB] George Fothergill of Newcastle
    2. Fairless, Michael
    3. All George Fothergill was appointed Harbour Master (or Quaymaster) of Newcastle in April 1809 and was still serving in the post on 11.10.1828 (according to the Newcastle Courant) I believe he may be my 5 x gt grandfather but there is the possibility that he may be his son. My George Fothergill was baptised 1.11.1747 All Saints and was a 'mariner' when he married Elizabeth Forster 19.5.1771 at Tanfield and also on the birth of his children 1772-1782 at least One of his sons was also named George (baptised 3.7.1774 All Saints). Did his wife Elizabeth die shortly after 1782 as the 'supply of children' ceases after only 10 years. My question is which one was more likley to be the 'Harbour master'? My gtx5 grandfather would have been 62 in April 1809 and his son would only have been 35 but in 1828 they would have been 81 and 54 respectively Are there any records as to when he was succeeded in the post? Many thanks Mike Fairless

    2. Jan, It is very probable that "your" Horse Close is one of the two within the Parish of Haltwhistle, and not the other Horse Close farms/communities, eg. near Mickley, Simonburm parish etc. For modern day photos of the Horse Close farm within the Melkridge Township of Haltwhistle use "NY740640" ( or "NY7464) as search criterion with in web site _www.geograph.org.uk_ (http://www.geograph.org.uk) The photos are supplemented by a small clear map. For the other Haltwhistle Horse close, in the Featherstone Township input NY6661... no photo of farm, but a nice map. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------- Articles from newspaper The Newcastle Courant 27 Nov 1824 " FARMS TO LET.... at the Sun Inn, Haltwhistle : : : 6th.
