    3. E I used to live at 18 Ravensworth Terrace in Bensham and our back gardens all backed onto Liddell Terrace. Can I help with anything? What I do remember is the Toffee Factory and I can still smell the fragrance to this day! 3. Many thanks to Heather, Peter, Barb, and Jennette for your guidance and suggestions to this greenie re this thread. I took up the great sport of curling when I was 73, many years too late to become a real curler. Alas, I've done likewise with genealogy, but I'm learning a lot from the list and listers, and keeping track of of helpful clues and web sites. Thanks again. 3. Hi Barbara I have a photo of every kid in the village circa 1903 but it was a very small place. In the 1950s my in laws were offered Orchard House opposite the church for £100.00 and when I asked why they turned it down was advised that it would be a return to the dark ages and had no appeal at all. I think tht investment might have survived the credit crunch! Other names are our own Batey, and Moffit Wilkinson and O Brien , Other girls I have pictures of are Mary Pearson and Bella Robson. I have loads of picturs of Kirkwhelpipngtoncharabanc trips in the 20s somewhere. There is a book called "In the Troublesome times" published by Spredden northern classics which collected ancecdotes from Cambo WI in the 1920s. I have checked the index as several of our family are quoted describing Kirkwhelpington village life eg guising at New Year. The Hepples in this book's index are Hepple of Black Heddon, Thomas and William. The book "Kirkwhelpington the lovely village of the Vale" mentions a Robert Hepple in 1843 at Woodbine Cottage. sorry that is all I could spot. Years ago I went to Morpeth library as i gave them pictures of people in service at Wallington and was shown a shelf of unindexed photos of the area in the cellar which hopefully survived last year's floods. 3. Brian I've offered them/her several times over the years and am worn down by that channel . There may be a victory party website one day as they seem to be common in family collections. . Bensham Grove Association has taken a copy of a painting of the Grove garden we had which they use in their displays and servant photos of Peter's granny and grandad who worked there but their interest is specific to the Spence Watsons. i also have gardening books given to Peter's grandad by the Spence Watsons and a letter from Peter's granny describing how she cared for Mrs Spence Watson when she was dieing and had to reat her ulcerated legs. She absolutely idolised Elizabeth Spence Watson. I offered Denton library some photos of the family farm at Dumpling hall which is now a modern housing estate but they didn't need them either. I can't be the only person who has these little nuggets tucked away doomed to be lost. But at least I've tried. The Hubert Terrace party was a great one. The girls are dressed up as nurses and there is bunting and decoration all over the Bensham terrace. I also have lots of unscanned photos of the "ladies" of St Cuthberts church in the 50s and 60s. On retreats to Allendale, marching into Durham cathedral and looking very formidable in front of the old rectory. One funny press clipping we have is when Peter's Grandad William Brewis the verger found a stark naked man on the altar circa 1950 at St Cuthberts and the vicar reports to the Evening Chroncle that Mr Brewis has had to go and have a lie down due to the shock of seeing this. 1. [NMB] Deaths from influenza 1918-19 some house nos S Shields
    2. Hallo I was casting around the net looking for information on old Thames Street and found the following URL: http://influenza.sph.unimelb.edu.au/data/S0001/chapters/app_6.pdf It is a Report on an Investigation of Epidemic Influenza in South Shields 1919, D Morley Mathieson M.D. p529 - 540 It gives a table for the following streets, a brief description of the streets, the rents and the occupations of the dead person in each house. Obviously no names are given. It strikes me that this is a period following the latest published census and that it might help anyone searching for a relative in Death section of bmd's if they had someone in one of these houses in 1911 census whose occupation matches that in this table. List herewith: Lawe Cottages Group - nos 55-60 Hepple's Court Group (Waterloo Vale) - either 2 or 4 Osborne Avenue Group - 43-61 odd nos only Marsden St Group - 133-151 odd nos only Hill Street Group - 7/9/11/12/13/14/15 Simon St Group - 16/18/20 Eglesfield Rd Group - 66-84 even nos West Park View Group - 145 - 167 odd nos Double Bow Group (Colliery Cottages) - 1-10 I am sure that most of you know this but the abbreviations in the rent figures l s d stand for pounds shillings and pence respectively. The description of the Colliery Cottages is fuller than the rest of the groups and the rent ratings system is explained. In view of the current influenza threat, this excerpt makes pertinent reading. i hope this will be useful to someone Bye Glenda
