Robin: You will be aware of the "old photos" type of book, of which there seems to be one to cover just about anywhere and anything these days. There are at least two for rural life in Northumberland in general, some of the photos in which, though by no means all, will be from the late 19th century. One was produced by the late Robin Gard when he was county archivist and is based on a series of photos of ordinary working life around Mitford, mainly in Edwardian days, discovered as glass slides by an uncle of mine when he became Vicar of Mitford. They had been taken by an earlier Vicar and were mouldering away in an outhouse before my uncle deposited them in the Record Office. A later one, called, I think, Rural Life in Northumberland in Victorian Days" or somethign similar. may still be in priint, though I'm not sure who the author or printer was. There have been two, I think, books of a more conventional type, about life in the extreme north of Northumberland, around, say, Ford. Someone else might know the titles. I am not sure, however, precisely which period they cover. Otherwise pick a rural village and look for a village history. You'll probably find one available. Geoff Nicholson

Judith: Someone once said that we in the north-east have more history than other parts of the country. They were probably right. I am also reminded of Camden, who travelled the country seeking information for an officially-sponsored history of England in the 16th century, and who said about Northumberland that the local people were "great historians in their own country". More down-to-earth, though, I do think that genealogy, while of some interest in itself, being only a list of names, dates and relationships, usually needs a lot of background information to give it life, and that all comes from local history - all aspects of it - what things were going on locally at a "higher level" - military and political campaigns etc, at a local level - new buildings, industries, etc - and socially - living conditions, ways of spending leisure time etc. For someone who lived in central Newcastle, or in any other of our major towns, at a time when it was changing rapidly - ie any time in the last millenium or thereabouts - the situation then and in what was then the recent past would have been a major influence on everything they did. That is why I often think that the emphasis on entries in censuses, parish registers etc, and all the other stand-bys of genealogy, while necessary to get the relationships right, is nevertheless sometimes overdone if the local history is ignored. We have to strike a balance. Geoff Nicholson
On the 1911 Census for Gateshead the enumerator has pencilled in the name of an employer. It looks like Scott & Moritz, the individual is employed as a Machine Man. Can anyone provide any information on the correct name and nature of business of this company? Many thanks Ruth in Hambledon, Hampshire "The Cradle of Cricket"
Hi Two posts in the "Victory pics Gateshead" thread have been rejected by the mailing list software because they were far too big. The actual messages were tiny - just a line or two - but the quotations were huge. Please note what our list rules say on the subject of quotations: "When responding to a message do not quote the whole of the original message. Edit your quote to include the minimum needed to put your response in context ..." For some reason in this thread posters have not only quoted the whole of the original message, they've quote the entire thread up to that point, so the posts were getting longer and longer. It's quite ridiculous - one of the rejected messages consisted of a single sentence, but the quotation included several entire messages and totaled more than 11,000 byes. That's almost enough in that single post to fill a digest. Some of the messages which reached the list weren't much better and doubtless a just scraped past the size limitation. What a waste of space! We only need enough of a quote to put the response in context, a handful of lines is usually enough. So, please, before you press "Send", have a look at the quote, decide what little bit of that quote is needed to remind readers what you are replying to, AND DELETE THE REST. Hi, I have a hairdresser, James Elsdon in High Friars St, Newcastle St John, and a cordwainer, Stephen Elsdon in Back Row, Newcastle St John from 1790-1820. Does anyone know where Back Row was? I can see the modern Friars St but not Back Row on the maps. Judith Australia

Does anyone know where Back Row was? I can see the modern Friars St but not Back Row on the maps. Judith Judith: If you can see a modern "Friar Street" on maps, be very cautious. There are two Friar Streets in the centre of Newcastle. The most prominent, and so most likely to get onto a map is Low Friar Street, which runs from Fenkle Street (near Charlotte Square) to Newgate Street, which it meets at the modern entertainment/leisure complex caled The Gate. Its name refers to the Friars from the Blackfriars monastery, the ruins of which are nearby. High Friar Street used to run east from the other side of Newgate Street, but further north, near the New Gate itself, and is supposed to have been the route by which the Grey Friars from their establishment on the west side of Pilgrim Street, near Pilgrim Street Gate, used to access St Andrew's church. When Blackett Street was built the eastern end of High Friar Street was merged into it, but when Anderson Place, the later embodient of what had originally been the Grey Friars Monastery, was demolished and its attached land used to build some of what is now "Grainger Town", that and of High Friar Street was recreated a few yards further south, so that it no longer lined up quite conveniently with its western end, from which it was then separated by the tops of Grey Street and Grainger Street and the imposing Grey's Monument. Now that eastern end still exists but the older, western, end was flattened c1970 by part of the Eldon Square shopping centre, inside which the shopping mall which more or less covers the same ground is officially named "High Friars" (I have yet to hear anyone actually call it that, but then I'm not the shopaholic type). Back Row was further south again and linked the bottom part of Westgate Road with St Nicholas Street. That district was competely altered in the middle of the 19th century by the building of the High Level Bridge (opened 1849) and the associated lines, embankments, etc, at which time Back Row disappeared entirely. It's eastern end was in St Nicholas Street, opposite the Black Gate, where Westgate Road now emerges, and its western end lined up with the Postern, which was more or less where Forth Street is today. That means that most of its route is now under the main London to Edinburgh railway line and will be travelled by rail travellers bound for places north of Newcastle just after they leave Newcastle Central Station. Come to think of it, that means it will also be under what was for many years billed as "the largest level crossing in the world", a complex of points between the station platforms and the Castle Keep, where the numerous lines all have branches leading across the others and onto the High Level Bridge.. We are steadily finding out more about Alice May GARDNER but can find no trace of her in 1891. Can anyone suggest a new way to search for her? In 1891 her family are scattered with the eldest three in Newcastle but her younger 4 siblings are in Reformatories (sisters in Darlington and Sunderland) and care homes. We've searched 1891 Census indexes with variants of her surname and for her using either Christian name and no surname with no sighting. I've looked at the images for work houses in Gateshead, Newcastle and no sightings. Part of the challenge is that this family inconsistent with names, ages and place of birth. Alice May Gardner was born in 1885 in Newcastle upon Tyne and appears with her parents in Gateshead in the 1901 Census at 3 Cobden Terrace Gateshead ( RG13/4758 Folio 97 page 31) ... Here her parents have given wildly wrong ages and variant information is a characteristic of this family. By 1911 Alice is married to John LANNEN and living with 3 children in Grosvenor Road Gateshead ( RG14-30-4-21-30421_0851_03). BUT none of the children appear in the BMD indexes! At least two more children are born ... Patrick in 1912 (birth is registered ) and Elizabeth in 1914 whose birth was registered in 1929! There may be a son Edward born in1919 but we have found no birth registration and he thought his father was Patrick. Robin
Can anyone help with information about Langton Terrace Newcastle upon Tyne in 1937? We've seen images of it as is today. What sort of street was it in 1937? Our interest is in finding out find who was living at number 4. Henrietta Jane (Jean) GARDNER (b 1874 d 1946) gives this as he last UK address when she returns to USA after a visit. She became a naturalised US citizen in California in early 1935 and made a visit back to Newcastle in May 1935 and again in July 1937. We suspect to a brother and would like to find out. Robin

While I have no specific knowledge of the particular people concerned in the recent query on this topic, perhaps it would help if I were to make a few general comments. The Tyzacks are usually grouped with the Henzells and the Titorys as one of three Huguenot families which arrived in Newcastle in the 17th century and which are credited with starting the Newcastle glass industry. Timothie Teswicke (Tyzack), glass makar, a ffrenchman" had a child baptised at Newcastle St Nicholas in 1619. Later generations lived in Gateshead, where in 1654 another "Timothie Tisick" became one of the Overseers of the Poore". Note that this was during the "Commonwealth Period" when the Puritans had the upper hand, so we should not be surprised that some, at least, of the next generation became Quakers. There were Quaker burial grounds in the district but wherever she may have been buried a stone to one "Abigall Tizacke" who died in infancy in 1679 was placed near to the Ouseburn glassworks. it was later removed to a more salubrious spot further up the Ouseburn, in what became Armstrong Park and is now better known as Jesmond Dene. Whether the Tizacks actually were the first to make glass here is another matter but they were certainly responsible for the first large-scale glassworks. After possibly first setting up in The Close in Newcastle (an unlikely place since, although adjacent to the river it was a street where the wealthy had their mansions), they moved to the lower Ouseburn valley, where the remains of some of the early kilns are still to be seen, not far upstream from the Glasshouse Bridge, which carries the road to the lower part of Byker (St Peters and St Lawrence's) and Walker across the Ouseburn. It seems the Titorys soon died out but the others prospered and to multiplied, though the Henzells seem to have been rather more numerous in later years then the Tyzacks. Some branches of the family remained in the glass business and others became prominent in various other ones, while yet others - younger sons of younger sons, no doubt - merged into the rest of the working population. I believe Henzells were involved in the 19th century glass works of South Shields, and there was certainly a branch which became mariners. Tyzacks are probably still remembered mainly for their clay-mine at Scotswood/Denton Burn, which produced raw material for their adjacent factory making sanitary ware - toilets, wash basins, etc for bathrooms and public toilets, in many of which the name "Tyzack" can still be seen. The Reilley's don't ring a bell. I remember the father worked for Fentaman's pop factory. I also remember taking in a grass snake that belonged to a girl who lived around your house but cannot recall her name now. You won't know me because as you left in 1955 I was only in the infants school then. Do you remember any of the names of people in Liddell Terr and do you have any of the Victory day photos. My relations lived there from 1939 I believe. I have fond memories of those days - long ago now. Hi All, I have recently learned that my husband is descended from Joseph Tyzack b c1781 in Newcastle-on-Tyne. His father was also Joseph of Newcastle. Supposedly his mother is unknown, and he is considered illegitimate. Joseph b1871 was a ships carpenter in the Navy working in Chatham in 1805. He was married briefly to Dinah Taylor in England. Later he went to Quebec where he married Margaret Cairncross in 1808. Eventually, they settled in Lanark, Ontario. There is a Joseph Tysick (the spelling changed later in Canada) Site on the web which gives his supposed family back to Lorraine where they were the Du Thisac glassblowers. They were Hugenots who went to Newcastle about 1400. Is anyone on this list familiar with this Tyzack family? I would like to find Joseph Sr.'s birth about 1750-1760 in Newcastle. His possible parents are George Tyzack and Dorothy Millburn. I would also like to know if he ever married? And I would like to find the exact birth of Joseph Tyzack Jr in Newcastle c1871. The IGI has the Abt. 1871 date. Any help greatly appreciated, Joan Ottawa
Wow, I wonder If I know you then. I lived at Liddell Terr and went to Brighton Ave school. Moved 1962. I have always wanted photos of Liddell Terr, Bensham bank end before the toffee factory, which I too remember well. Small world. My great gran was in Fountain view and no one has photos of her so I thought there might be some of the patients around that time, 1951-3. Do you remember the Big Irish family that lived in your street, I forgot their name now. Memories. Their house is at Beamish museum now, which again revives old memories.
