    1. [NMB] Location of Lesbury Church Records.
    2. Wendy Jessup
    3. Dear List, Can anyone please advise me on the likely location of the local parish records of St Mary's Church, Lesbury? I am interested to find out who erected a headstone that still stands in the churchyard. It is 'In Memoriam' to a number of members of a local family and I am fairly sure was erected in the period 1882-1886. Would there be details of this in the local parish council minutes, and if so, where would these records be located? I am guessing probably at Woodhorn? Thanks Wendy (Sydney)

    1. Re: [NMB] Place Name Hanning(or Hanging) Side, Longbenton
    2. Dave, Hanging/Hanning Side was close ( from 1881 census listings) to the Rising Sun Farm. It's postcode is NE2 89JL ( Co-ordinates NZ3068 or NZ302686) Durham County Council web site has a GIS mapping feature ( sorry unable to get link to work) which allows map search by postcode. Then when centred on modern day spot you can chose historical map versions back to 1850s. The pits nearby are to west and south. Quarry to east. Have a go yourself at navigating around the area. 3. Hello, I'm hoping someone on the group can help me locate the above name. >From census schedules it clearly lies in the eastern area of the parish, somewhere in the area of Craster Pit or Rising Sun Farm, but I have not been able to locate it on any of the old maps which I have access to. Many thanks, Dave King

    3. Hi Debra, I have wanted to look inside the Northern Counties club for years. Seemingly all the County Set used the place. People walk past without realizing it is there. Bob -----Original Message----- From: northumbria-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:northumbria-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Wright Sent: 12 December 2009 18:38 To: northumbria@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NMB] Newcastle pubs (was FAWCUS, BONE & ARKLE) Thanks Geoff I'm going to have to look a that curve in the Crown Posada. That's fascinating. I have photos of my 18th birthday there but the curve is not in sight. George who used to play the harmonica is sitting next to me playing Happy Birthday though if you remember him. I had Sunday lunch with friends the other month in a very nice gastro style pub near the law courts and realised I was in the Baltic Tavern. This used to be a real Fagin's den of little rooms leading off each other along corridors if anyone remembers it. I remember my mother being convinced i was consorting with gangsters by entering the place and I promised I would never go again. the food was probably beter but I'm so pleased I experienced a pub like that while it still survived. The old Newcastle Arms was frequented by us because it had a pool table for the lads , Nancy Sinatra on the jukebox fro the lasses and those plate pies . When I was small I always used to think the Pineapple near the Monument looked impossibly glamorous as we walked to Marlborough Crescent for the bus. It looked from the outside like it had lots of booths and had windows all the way around which was as near as we got to a see a pub in the 60s and early 70s . We could sit on plank with a bag of crisps outside the Woodmans Arms in Whickham but not look inside. I was at a charity auction yesterday and one of the bids was a meal at the Northern Counties Private Club in Hood treet which i had never heard of. Apparently it is a private members club going back to 1826 and is beautiful inside with lots of history. ( Hpood street links Grey Street with Pilgrim Street Nancy) Newcastle's hidden buildings are brilliant. Wendy Surviving records of St Mary's will be at Woodhorn as you surmise, but won't provide the information you seek. There were no Parish Councils as early as 1886 (the earliest were 1897) and they are local government bodies which have nothing whatsoever to do with the church premises or churchyard. I think you mean Parochial Church Council - but these only date from 1919. They were the successors of the Vestry - a group consisting of either any parishioner who wished to attend or, in areas with a "Closed" or "Select" Vestry, the group consisted of a self- perpetuating body called the "Four and Twenty". Anyway, be that as it may, none of this will help you because, as far as I'm aware, no official body will have a record of who erected the headstone. If the stone was erected by an established company then presumably they would have a record of the transaction, but the chances of such records surviving are small and the chances of locating and accessing it, even smaller. 3. What a wonderful List this is! It's great that you can discuss things like the Monkey Bar which are not strictly speaking Genealogy but most definitely Family History (capitals intended). I've been on some Lists when such veering off topic is strictly discouraged, but others (eg Lanark) where the most marvellous discussions take place. Its been fascinating reading about the old buildings and goings-on in Pilgrim Street. I sometimes wish I could hop into a Tardis and backtrack to my big OE (Overseas Experience, a rite of passage for young Aussies and Kiwis) when I was young and silly and didn't know anything about my family history; and spend my time more wisely. At least I did investigate some London pubs! Nancy in NZ

Where and how our ancestors and relatives lived should be an important part of anyone's research. As long as we stick to the list area and don't mentions living people, local history is fine. 3. Ingrid, I apologise. You are quite right. Just before your posting appeared another person not on this list sent me the 1871 Census entry but omitted the word 'widow' and I thought perhaps Francis was away from home on Census night. I was also misled by a private member's entry on Ancestry.com which gave the death of a Francis b 1808, with wife Margaret, as being on 1 Sept 1876. I belatedly realised that this did not agree with the correct Census entry you sent, which gave Margaret as a widow. Thank you also for giving the full reference details of each Census entry, it is much appreciated. Nancy > From FreeBMD: > Deaths Mar 1867 Fawcus James 29 Newcastle T. 10b page 87
