Ruth In practice the original entry may not be primary (not prime) either because details were sometimes noted on scraps of paper and entered into registers periodically. But yes, I agree that the register is usually the nearest we'll get to a primary source and should therefore be checked on the chance that there'll be info there which is not available elsewhere. 3. Dear List, I would be grateful if some kind soul, when on a visit to Durham County Record Office, could look up the marriage of Jonathan Martin and record it for me. Jonathan Martin [1782-1838], who set fire to York Minster in 1829, has had his life recorded in a number of books but none have given the full name of his first wife or the date of marriage. On the on-line IGI there is a marriage at St. Mary the Virgin, Norton near Stockton on Tees between Jonathan Martin and Martha Carter on 1st. August 1812. I hope someone will be willing to look up this marriage on the microfilm of Norton parish registers. With thanks in anticipation. Mildred Robson

    3. Once thing you have to watch is the spelling is not always correct on censuses- found this out the hard way with my grandparents - 4 different spellings on 4 census reports till finally the correct one for the next 3 years. Brian taught me that and it sure helped. So you may have to broaden your search criteria. Also just becasue it says a person is born in 1897 on a census that is an approx date and can go either up or down 1 year. As for your family how about these........ 1.. Thomas Kavanagh married Margaret McCoy in Lancaster Durham 2nd Quarter 1894 2.. I found your Catherine which matches your dates - that is her date stated as: a.. Catherine Bridget Kavanagh registered 3rd Quarter - Sept 1896 Gateshead,Tyne and Wear County Durham in Volume 10 page 971 Ancestry.co.uk Free BMD index 1837-1915 b.. Also the info that you stated on John Thomas Kavanagh matches what you wrote. 3. I did find a marriage for a Patrick McIntyre and a Margaret Elizabeth Kavanagh 3rd Quarter 1902 Newcastle upon Tyne Northumberland, Tyne and Wear Volume 10b page 263 Ancestry.co.uk on the BMD index 1837-1915 which may be who you are looking for and proves they weren't married 20 years by 1911. Joyce On the 1911 census it states that her and her partner, Patrick McIntyre, were married for some 20 years, which I know to be untrue as she was first married to Thomas in 1894 in Lanchester Co Durham, giving birth twice to Catherine in 1896 then to John Thomas in 1898 - he died in 1900 in Newcastle upon Tyne. 3. Yes Thomas Kavanagh is my great=grandfather and I believe he was born in Ireland and I know his father was John. The ref for the 1871 census is RG10/4953. I know he wasn't born in Wrexham and I know his brother John wasn't born in Ferry Hill either - I have checked both of those. Try looking on the 1881 British census there is a Thomas Kavanagh born in Jarrow Durham with parents Andrew and Dorothy plus brother Andrew on what looks like # 5 Brancker Street Toxteth Park Lancashire England RG11; Piece: 3647; Folio: 154; Page: 49; GSU roll: 1341874. a.. Another one to look at would be 1871 British Census there is a Thomas Kavanagh who was born in 1861 in Durham living in Yorkshire and living with his parents Daniel and Elizabeth plus siblings Margaret Daniel, Elizabeth, William and Michael RG10; Piece: 4311; Folio: 57; Page: 43; GSU roll: 846979. a.. There is also a Thomas Kavanagh born Mar 1873 - South Shields, Durham, Tyne and Wear plus a Thomas Owen Kavanagh Born May- July 1871 in South Shields Durham, Tyne and Wear that I found on the free BMD index that fits with the 1881 Census I found both of Thomas and Margaret's 2 children's birth and his marriage too so this looks like the best matches. E is trying to find my Great-grand father Thomas Kavanagh his wife, Margaret Mc Coy. That also is a mystery but if my research is right, and it may not be as I am a new researcher and don't really know the ropes, he appears to have been born in 1865 in Co Wicklow Ireland to Catherine and John Cavangh. 3. On this census they have my grandmother listed as Catherine McIntyre aged 14 at school. She was born IN 1896 NOT 1897 as I have her birth cert and married as Catherine Bridget Cavanagh in Newcastle in 1919 so I know someone lied and I know they were not married 20 years because Margaret, nee Mc Coy, the mother, was married to my great grandfather in 1894 at the Brooms Lanchester. The marriage to Patrick McIntyre says Margaret was a Widow when she married but I now do not believe that. I think she had an affair with Patrick and therefore broke up the marriage to Kavanagh and I think he would have gone off and probably remarried as he would only have been 35 years old in 1900 which is when he goes missing. I say this as his son John Thomas Kavanagh aged 1 year died in Newcastle Infirmary in 1900 and on his death cert his father is listed as a Gateshead coal miner - not as deceased. Where did he go and how can I find him, if that is possible. It is my dream to find him and stand at his grave if I can as I have looked for him for a lot of years now. 3. Hi All: The picture of Corsenside Church on Genuki fits almost perfectly with my recollection of the place I visited all those years ago. The size and age of the building seems just about right, and it's certainly located in the correct area. Close to a river too (the River Rede, or Reed, as some would have it) and on a decent road just off (Roman) Dere Street. The only problem I have with it is that the site seems far too tidy. Of course, when I visited, the Second World War had just ended, a lot of buildings had been neglected, if not abandoned, and labour and materials were thin on the ground. Or maybe the cleaners were just having a bad day! All the signposts had been taken down and placenames painted out, cars were as scarce as moon buggies and the few people who lived in the area seemed to have been abducted by aliens. I found my way about with a Boy Scout compass and a page torn from a school atlas. Today's locals will probably kill me for this, but what a lovely, fascinating part of the county this is to visit. It's thick with history covering thousands of years, from pre-Roman sites to long-gone industrial developments; the countryside ranges from the ultra-gentle going of the valleys to the wild harshness (and dangers) of the fells. Just remember to shut the gates. Now, where are that old lady and the pirate resting? Alan Fletcher Hill Hamilton,NZ

Can not find John or Thomas in 1841 or 1851 census. Although the marriage certificate from Edinburgh is quite hard to hear think his mother Margaret is deceased at the time of John's marriage 1859. I have no way of knowing if John's father Thomas was born in Northumberland. Can any one suggest where I could go from here????????? Regards Sue & Keep warm

Parsons, I worked back-stage in the evening's at the "Grand Theatre" in Byker, where many up and coming, and "fading", acts appeared, including, Kenneth More in repertory, Winifred Atwell playing her first date in England, Bobby Thompson, the Merry Magpies, Jack Mayho, The Tattler Girls etc. My old pal Alfie Page, (Padge) left the Grand to work at The Palace, so I may have seen Georgie there when "visiting", or possibly at the Empire, to where Padge had moved in the early '50's. It seemed that was the "grading" for variety theatres at that time, the Grand being in the 3rd. Division.! Theatre Royal was "high-brow" to us urchins.
