    1. [NMB] Hudspeth family Newcastle and Heworth area?
    2. Fairless, Michael
    3. All Is anyone researching the Hudspeth name? I am hoping to get some assistance with an ancestor who has his middle name as 'Hudspeth' but I don't know why ! Details are George Hudspeth Fothergill born 5.3.1803, bapt 8.5.1803 Heworth to parents Joshua Fothergill and Margaret Mills (married 11.5.1802 St John's Newcastle). I suspect that he probably died in infancy but I would like to know why the middle name 'Hudspeth' was used, probbaly a maiden name somewhere down the line but which one and when please? Many thanks Mike Fairless

    3. Dear Listers, I have tried to join the ' MORPETH ' list as this is the area I am interested in but with no luck so have now gone to Northumbria, hoping that someone may be able to help me.. I have a birth for John Thomas KIRTLEY - 4 September 1899 - Morpeth District. Ref. 10b 426. I have been unable to find him on the 1901 Census but have found two others who are slightly older and born in either Washington or Norton, Co, Durham. I am interested in who his Parents were. He married Ann MITCHELSON in 1923 in the Tynemouth District. If anyone is going to the records office and could do a look up for me on John Thomas KIRTLEY to find his Parents I would be extremely grateful. Many thanks, Judy Brown Queensland, Australia.

Ref. 10b 426. Judy, Probably the best way to proceed from here is to obtain John's birth certificate. This will give the names of his parents, and other potentially useful information. Certificates are available from local registrars, or from GRO (General Register Office). There is a fee. If you do a web search you will find plenty of information. Whilst there is now a vast amount of information available online, there is often no substitute for paper records. 3. Francis and Grace Forster of Low Buston (near Warkworth) are my ancestors. The following paragraph contains a reference to Francis and Grace. "The MS. volume . . . exhibited contains a ledger of Nicholas Forster of Newcastle, merchant, kept with great neatness between 1641 & 1654, and also a series of accounts, entered by his executor, of his ventures and liabilities at the time of his death. Nicholas Forster was of the Newham family, whose pedigree was worked out, as well as the material would admit, in volume I. of the new History of Northumberland. He died in ripe age in October, 1679, whilst on a visit to his niece Grace, wife of Francis Forster of Low Buston, and was buried at Bamburgh on the 28th of that month, apparently with the feasting and pomp used by the Forster clan at that period. . . ." [Source: Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle-upon-Tyne; Vol. VII, No. 26, 1896; presentation by Mr. J. Crawford Hodgson, who exhibited the account book of Nicholas Forster.] I need to find the Forster of Newham pedigree referred to above - apparently published in Vol. 1 of the Northumberland County History. I have been unable to find the pedigree online. Suggestions? Thank you. William Forster Archerd Colorado USA

    3. > The voting qualifications were: > 1918 Men over 21, women over 30, servicemen over 19. > 1928 Everybody over 21. > 1969 Everybody over 18. __________________________________ The thread on Electoral Registers has reminded me of a longstanding question concerning additional qualifications marked in the Newcastle Parliamentary Registers. These may appear next to a person's name, for example "a" = "absent voter", as well as R, B and O for Residence, Business and Occupation qualifications, but I am interested to know the meaning of the following: # ... not entitled to vote in respect of that entry at elections of Guardians other than casual vacancies $ ... not entitled to vote in respect of that entry at elections of Councillors for the City and County of Newcastle upon Tyne J ... Juror SJ ... Special Juror My grandparents married in 1917 and lived 1917-1924 at 95 Gloucester Street (Stephenson Ward); they then moved to 56 Juliet Street (Armstrong Ward) until about 1928. Against my grandfather's name in volumes 1922b, 1923a and 1923b is the mark "J". How did one become a Juror in those days - and what was a Special Juror? In volumes 1924a and 1924b are the marks "#" and "$". These marks seemed to have been an exception rather than the rule, but I have not been able to find the significance. My grandfather was said to have acquired some other property locally too, but I've yet to find where - don't know if that has anything to do with it. Thanks for any help. Kath

    3. Hi all Just a note,on the subject of Electoral Registers, we have been trying to get hold of the Electoral registers for Whitley Bay in the 1920's to 1940's and they have apparently been destroyed. We tried at North Tyneside Local Studies, Whitley Bay Libaray, Tyne Wear Archives and as a last resort Woodhorn. The reason given was that they are superceded each year and someone thought they weren't needed as the new information was given in the following year. The Tynemouth Registers are there and Wallsend too so it leads me to think it was when the Borough's were amalgamated this occurred. It just makes you wonder what else went the journey at that time, perhaps we will never know. Marg

You'll need to check with the County Record Office/main library for the area concerned to see if the register you want still exists.. Of course it's important to remember that children are never listedon electoral registers, and that prior to 1928, not all adults were listed either. The voting qualifications were: 1832 Men owning property worth £2 per year or more. 1867 Men owning/renting property worth £5 per year or more. 1884 Men owning/lodging in property worth £10 per year or more. 1918 Men over 21, women over 30, servicemen over 19. 1928 Everybody over 21. 1969 Everybody over 18. Prior to 1832 there were poll books which were compiled after elections and showed how everyone had voted. They are of limited value to genealogists because very few people were entitled to vote at that time.
