Thank you Mildred My father was apprenticed as a boilermaker in the early 1930's but was laid off as soon as he finished. He retrained in the building trade at Wallsend Stadium and came down to Lincolnshire to work on the airfields in preparation for WW2. You are lucky to have records. My family threw everything away! My father in law commenced his five year apprenticeship as a ship's draughtsman at the age of fifteen at Swan Hunter and Wigham Richardson Ltd, on 2nd. September 1918 and was lucky in that he was kept on as a journeyman for one year before losing his job due to lack of work. His reference dated 17th, September 1924 says " it is only through slackness of work that we are compelled to dispense with his services" At this time my father who served a five year apprenticeship as a maintenance electrician was also 'given his cards' due to lack of work. Both were fortunate to obtained work after this, one at Parsons, Heaton Works and the other at Hawthorn Leslie's shipyard at Hebburn. Mildred Robson
Thank you to all the people who sent me information on shipyard apprenticeships and how to find old maps of Willington Quay Much appreciated Delia
I have Elizabeth Kirtley married George Cameron in Sunderland 1800. Does anybody else have this Elizabeth Kirtlry or Kirkley in their tree? Thanks. Kevin

Delia, I can confirm as Brian has said, 5 years was the normal time for an apprenticeship. There were quite a few yards along both North and South banks Tyne at that time, perhaps Smith's Dock would have been the nearest to Willington Quay. How long were shipyard appreticeships in the 1920's? My father served an apprenticeship, presumably when he left school at 14 in 1926 and I was told he was got dismissed as soon as he had completed it, as there was no work. He lived in Willingto Quay but I do not know which shipyard he worked in. When he joined the army in 1940 he was later moved into the REME and became a riveter so I have assumed this had been his trade in the shipyards. Any help or guidance for reading on this subject would be appreciated Delia

I have a birth for John Thomas KIRTLEY - 4 September 1899 - Morpeth District. Ref. 10b 426. I have been unable to find him on the 1901 Census but have found two others who are slightly older and born in either Washington or Norton, Co, Durham. I am interested in who his Parents were. He married Ann MITCHELSON in 1923 in the Tynemouth District. If anyone is going to the records office and could do a look up for me on John Thomas KIRTLEY to find his Parents I would be extremely grateful. Many thanks, Judy Brown Queensland, Australia.
