Could anybody please tell me where to find the parish records for St.John Lee. I am looking for the Stokoe family of Thomas and Frances 1760- 1820 . Maryann was ch.1815-1816 thanks Lynne
Hi Bruce and others on this list, I have made some progress with finding my cousins in Newcastle on Tyne recently. I have found that my mother's cousin Frederick H DODDS married Isabella LOGAN in 1947. They appear to have had a son Frederick M W DODDS in 1949 in Newcastle on Tyne. I'd like to hear from anyone who may know of this family (please keep privacy of living people in mind when replying via list). Hi Adrian Re your newspaper snippets It does look pretty unjust to us but, sadly, 15 yrs old wasn't as "young" in those days as it is now and I think there was still some sort of an idea, even this late in time, that somehow a rape was just about all of the woman's fault. I am surprised there was a conviction at all. Also with regard to the theft of a bonnet, commission of theft of property (however small)was just about the worst crime one could commit in those days. Many people are not aware that there was not actually a lot of prison space available then and one of the reasons for starting the Aus convict colonies in the first place was that there hadn't previously been many punishments except hanging. There was an increasing public high-level feeling against all this hanging but the prison hulks got too overcrowded. Another reason, by the way, was that the government thought that the prisoners could go over there and grow trees to use for the Royal Navy ships. Sadly, the trees in Aus proved to be no use for the purpose! Wonder where they could send us these days to reduce prison overcrowding!! Here endeth ...! Regards Glenda

Hello Lynne For any NBL or DUR parish information, your first action is by googling "genuki" then the "name of the parish". http://www.bpears.org.uk/genuki/NBL/StJohnLee/ChurchRecords.html This will tell you the registers are at Woodhorn NBL, the home of the NBL archives. While searching the 19th century Newspaper Archive (in vain) to find any trace of my g.g.grandfather William NiICHOLSON I found the following items adjacent to each other in the search results - it is possible, but I think unlikely, that the same man was involved in each. However comparison of the sentencing would nowadays cause justifiable outrage: August 1862: William George Nicholson (an agent for a benefit society) was charged with the attempted rape of a twelve-year-old girl in Newcastle. He was found guilty and sentenced to three months in prison. At the Durham Special Sessions in February 1863, William George Nicholson, a draper, was charged with the theft of several sums of money amounting to about one pound. He was sentenced to six months in prison. (The next case that day involved a spinster who stole a bonnet and a quantity of ribbon belonging to her master and received four years penal servitude.) Yes, I realise the bare newspaper reports don't give all the details leading to the decision of the courts, but even so..... Adrian

Hi can anyone tell me where the Lowick parish records are held as there seems to be a gap from 1826 to 1837 on the IGI Pat Walker
Delia I found Nelson St and Willington House on an Alan Godfrey Map, Willington Quay 1895, listed as Tyneside Sheet 7. These should be available in your local library or from Gateshead, where Alan Godfrey maps are available to buy George
I would like very much to know where Delia found her grandfather's Boer War enlistment documents, because I can't get to first base trying to find my father's from the Northumberland Hussars. Bruce Dodd Ottawa, ON
I am not expert in UK apprenticeships, but I've done one. I came from Canada to do what was called a grad apprenticeship in the heavy machinery shops of British Thomson-Houston in the early fifties. A very smooth move! To my surprise, the school-leaving age was then 14, and there were many young craft apprentices who had come straight from school. As far as I know, their five years began then. The BTH scheme was written up in the Times Educational Supplement as a "Great Social Experiment", observing that in the Rugby apprentice hostel, a former stately home of England, each race-horse had been replaced by six apprentices. The Times also mentioned that "the level of luxury...was not such as to rot the moral fibre". Bruce Dodd Ottawa, ON
