    3. Hi All I have recently found a family handwritten note book dating back to 1815. In it is a page headed "Cow witched" and it reads as follows ;- "Cream three spoons full in the cow. Three spoonfuls buried where a foot will never tread. Three spoonfuls in the fire. Stop every hole in the house up And the One will cum to the door." The family lived in Newcastle so it may be a North East thing. It reads like a spell but what is Cow Witched any ideas would be most welcome. Does anyone have any idea what this is about or can you advise me where to look. Dick Hutchinson

    2. Evelyn MacCallum
    3. Hello Paul Though both Hall and Kirkley seem fairly common names and the dates you gave aren't compatible, I just wonder if there is a connection between my Kirkley / Hall families and yours. In my line, George Kirkley married Elizabeth Hall, daughter of Ralph Hall of Lanchester, in February 1808 , by licence in Heworth, Co Durham. They had a daughter, Elizabeth, born 1811, baptised in Heworth, 03 Nov1811. I have no further information about this Elizabeth. Probably this will just complicate things but there may be a family link somewhere. Best wishes, Evelyn

    1. [NMB] Whitehead /Landles Marriage
    2. joan armstrong
    3. I am back on the list after being absent for some time. I have tried for years to find my great great grandfathers marriage James Landles / Landals to Sarah Whitehead (James was a cooper) I found the baptisms of two of the children in Chapel St Berwickshire I have scrolled the marriage records from 1845 to 1860 with no luck, it looks as if their first child James was born 1850 I would think if they had their children Baptized they would have got married. James lived in Chapel St Berwickshire before marriage on the 18541 census and married to Sarah on the 1851 Census with children James & John. They had seven more children. James it appears traveled back & forth to Scotland. Any help in finding the marriage of these would be really appreciated as then i would be able to find out James fathers name . James was born in Scotland 1827 Sarah his wife was born in Berwickshire about 1830. Joan On N.S.W Central Coast Australia

    3. Hi Joan Is it possible that Sarah Whitehead was married before? I would look at any marriage of James to a Sarah. I had the same problem with my Joseph HARDY and his wife Sarah VINTON who were married in 1870. It turns out Sarah had had a very brief marriage to Arthur BOWMAN in 1860 when she was only 16 - so Joseph's wife turned out to be Sarah BOWMAN. The name BOWMAN was never mentioned on the birth certificates of any of her children! I never did find what happened to Arthur BOWMAN, A year after the marriage [1861] young Sarah was in the workhouse with a young child, and Arthur had vanished. Hope this suggestion helps Heather joan armstrong wrote: > I have tried for years to find my great great grandfathers marriage > James Landles / Landals to Sarah Whitehead ( > > >

    2. (Forwarded by Brian Pears at Pennie's request as she has had problems writing to the list) Thanks very much Brian. I think I might assume he died in Lamesley (was a miner) and she took the family back to Low Fell when she was widowed. Might as well risk it now before the prices go up. Whilst I have your attention, would you know how I could determine where Ivy Cottage were in Eighton Banks please, and if there might be pictures. I have been googling, but so far to no avail. Again, Thank you, Pennie

From 1938 to 1974 the area was in Durham Northern Registration District and since 1974 it has been in Gateshead Registration District. Brian

    3. Dear all, I cannot see my messages to the list so hope this makes it on. Trying to find my g.grandfathers death. William Smith died after 1901 and before 1911 census. Address in 1901 was Eighton Banks. 1911 Lowreys Lane Low Fell, but he is gone by then, his wife and family there. Not many contenders actually. He was born in 1861 and found one that comes under Chester Le St. Best fit death in 1908 right age. Could Eighton Banks have come under CLS please? Otherwise it has to be Gateshead, but that one would mean he was born 1863...which he was not. Cant afford to order loads of certs and have a leaning towards he CLS one, but Eighton Banks, St Thomas Lamesley......where the angel now is.... Could it ever have been under CLS. Welcome anyones help please? Thank you. Pennie
