Can anyone help me find John Scott a skinner, most likely; living in the Hexham area. I do not know his age as all the information I have is from his son William's marriage certificate. William's age on the marriage certificate is 21, the date is 15th May 1869. William is a tanner and the marriage took place in Hexham. The bride is Margaret Williamson. William and Margaret are living in Newcastle in 1871 and on all the following years gives his surname as Potts and has returned to live in Hexham. Thank you Ann

Hi again Sorry I should have included that you may find his burial in the PRs/BTs on recordsearch pilot (familysearch) http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start Select "Browse our record collections" Select Europe Select "England, Diocese of Durham Bishops Transcripts ca 1700-1900" Navigate via County to the Place/Parishes of interest These are not indexed but are free access , you soon get used to navigating the system, do keep a note of the page numbers you check Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Can someone help please with a death/burial date for George TALLENTIRE, > about 1802 in "Newcastle on Tyne" Northumberland. Hi Carmel No mention I can see in the 19th Century Newspaper collection or the Times online archive Obituaries were very much the preserve of the rich and famous so even if he was a fairly well off man he is unlikely to get an Obit unless he also did something rather unusual He is recorded in the National Burial Index, look ups are prohibited but much of it can be accessed on findmypast (a pay site) he is to be found in the index there Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Can someone help please with a death/burial date for George TALLENTIRE, > about 1802 in "Newcastle on Tyne" Northumberland. All Hoping someone can help me find Francis JOLLEY/JOLLY on the 1871 census or earlier On the 1881 he is Francis JOLLEY (or perhaps more likely, should be JOLLY) with his wife Elizabeth Jolley (formerly widow Tweddle, nee Falcus). He is supposedly aged 31 on the 1881 census but when he dies in 1905 he is given as being 64 years old so his birth year is either 1840/1 or 1850/1 and the 1881 Census states he was born in Scotland. In 1881 with his wife Elizabeth he also had children Sarah Jolley aged 8, Francis Jolley aged 6, Elizabeth A Jolley aged 3 and Agnes Jolley aged 5 months. Francis Jolley did not marry widow Elizabeth Tweddle until 1881so I am unsure whether this is his second marriage. (the 1911 Census shows widow Elizabeth Jolly still alive and the census entry has the fact that there were 5 children to the 'marriage' of which three were still living, the enumerator has crossed this entry out as it was not required - the fifth child being son Aylmer Jolley born 1884, so it might be that he was living with widow Elizabeth Tweddle as man and wife, Elizabeth Tweddle was widowed in 1869) Help!!! Mike, Yes the site still works and covers 1885-1906. Hello I am failing to find the marriage of Thomas Orkney (c1800 Co. Durham) to Priscilla (c1796 Tweedmouth). Have looked on Ancestry and IGI. They are residing in Tweedmouth in 1841, Thomas dies before 1851. The first known child is Alexander c1824 Tweedmouth Priscilla's maiden name may be "Temple" as one of the other children is called James Temple Orkney (a name passed on to (at least one) further generation) Can anyone help? Thanks Christel
My 3 x great grandfather, THOMAS BLACK, was born about 1789 in Blyth. He married Jane Corby on 10 Dec 1811 at Earsdon. Thomas was master mariner and part owner of the snow-rig Agenoria, built in Blyth in1806, until his death in 1839. A JAMES BLACK was variously part owner and master from 1806 to 1824. His share in the boat has passed to Margaret Black, his widow and executor, by 1836. A Mrs Margaret Black is listed at Waterloo, Blyth in an 1827 directory and in 1834 Pigot's Directory. A MARY BLACK of Waterloo is also listed in 1834 as a ship owner. I suspect that Margaret and James are the parents of Thomas but can find no marriage or baptism record. Can anyone help me to solve this puzzle? Meg in Nottingham
Meg, You can't find appropriate marriage and baptism. But where have you looked ? Michael ex-Blyth
Hi - I cannot help directly in regard to this query however, about two years ago whilst cataloguing some boxes of documents for Sunderland Antiquarian Society relating to the River Wear Commissioners, I came across the following: "Unanimous Association", dated at South Shields, 2nd January 1792 - a list of 73 ships giving the owners names ships names, masters name and the burthen in keels. Considering that this document relates to South Shields and also the closeness of th date there may possibly be a connection. If you think that it is of interest then you may be able to obtain a photocopy of the document if you make contact with the society via their website at www.sunderland-antiquarians.org. Alan Vickers.
Dear all, Could anyone do a look-up for me in the special collections of the University of Newcastle library? It's a small (18 page) pamphlet in the uncirculating "Cowen Tracts (1794)" entitled "Copy of Articles of the Friendly Cargo-Club, established in South Shields, March 12th, 1793." The only library copies I see are Newcastle or Texas, both a very long way from central Canada or I wouldn't ask. Looking at the marriage certificate dated November 13th, 1847 of my GG grandparents - William Maxwell Dixon b. 1822 in Newcastle and Mary Ann Johnson at Earsdon I noticed that he had been a widower . Recently I searched on the Free BMD but could not find an earlier marriage . I remembered years ago a helpful lister had sent me an 1841 census note of William with another spouse ( Marjorie I believe ) but I knew that he was married to Mary Ann so I did not keep that information ...foolish mistake . If anyone has access to the 1841 census I would appreciate a lookup . Cheers, Dorothy on Vancouver Island
Many thanks to John Hair for your reply. KenBooth
Fred Thanks for the lookup I am very grateful Audrey
