Hello to all, I am looking for the Church of Treby, thought to be in (or was) in Wapping, London. Where can I find information regarding the church? Samuel Troutbeck, b. 1700, baptized in Treby (?) 1708. Thanks for the help, SC
Hello Peter, My ancestors moved from the "Wapping" where they worked in the coal mines in Newcastle upon Tyne ( via South Shields) to Thornley, Easington Co Durham as the mines in they worked in in Newcastle were closing and the ones in North Durham were opening up. I know this from the parish records where children were born and census info. I even found some children had died here that i didn't know about. This is the link to records held by Durham County Archives, you can search them and pay for the records you want if you wish too. I found it really useful to get an idea where they were at a certain time between the Census years. I hope this is helpful to you. Brian, I wondered if I had misunderstood Fran's question, when I read your reply to her. Not living in Newcastle myself, I always thought that the Metro are trains and not trams. Hi Frances, Just found this link where it says the The system finally closed on 4 March 1950. Have a look at this for more information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newcastle_Corporation_Tramways Jan ----- Original Message ----- > Hello Folks > can anyone tell me when the trams stopped running in Newcastle please. > Fran

I don't know if anyone has access to Stamfordham Parish Records which might save me a trip to Woodhorn But I am looking for the baptism of a John Fawcus/Falcus/Faucus (etc !) in about 1673 to parents Robert and Barbara/Barbry and also the marriage of the said John (to Ann) probably about 21 years later (?) Mike: Further to my last message, it has bene pointed out to me that the NDFHS has the information from those registers on its database. Also, many of the Wood transcripts were published on fiche by Northfiche some time ago. They used to be available (by post!) from Woodhorn, and perhaps still are. However, while I was strictly speaking correct in saying that the Wood transctripts cover the period you mention, I should qualify that by saying that, according to the National Index of Parish Registers, those for Stamfordham survive only from 1662-1695 and from 1722 onwards. That might affect your chances of finding the marriage you seek. However, you could be helped by the availability of Boyd's Marriage Index (information also on the old microfiche IGI and no doubt also nowadays on the LDS web site). If you still can't trace it and still think it could have been at Stamfordham 1696-1721 then you could always look at the microfiche index to Durham Diocese Marriage Bonds, just in case it was one of the 10% (max!) or so that were by Licence. Sorry for the brevity of my last message - caused by my tea being in danger of getting cold, and we can't have that! The Isabella baptised at Birdhopecraig states born Boag. There is a Thormas Hedley son of John and Isabella batised 11 May 1794 of Boag but not a Mary. Janis
Thanks to all for the advice on Byker churches. I think I will start my search at St Silas (and keep my fingers crossed) Sue
Thank you for the various replies on this one. The other half of my household is on a "teach yourself social history" project of his home town. I was asked if I knew of such a map: since I couldn't immediately locate one I decided to ask this august company. I believe he's interested in what he calls the "ancient communities" making up the city within (and just without) the walls: for (an obvious example) instance suggesting that the keelmen and watermen gravitated mainly to All Saints, that there is a distinct "market area" between St Johns and St Nicks, and so on. (Don't all shout at me, its not my theory!!) For some reason he wanted to know where the boundaries actually were..... In the course of my work I spend time with the Wood PR transcripts, so its useful to know that just because a child was baptised in (say) St. Johns doesn't mean the parents lived in that immediate area, although I presume that a marriage (I work mainly in the C18) where the participants are listed as "both of this parish" does have to mean exactly that. And so could be a clue to where they actually lived at that time. I'll pass on the various suggestions. Julia
Hello Sue - the replies from Geoff Nicholson and Wyn are correct. People seemed to chose the church or vicar or minister they preferred. I grew up at 78 Raby Street and my grandmother lived at 132 Raby street. My mother lived in this area all her life, was born on Dalton Street, baptized at St. Silas church and married in Leighton Methodist on Heaton Road. My aunt (by marriage and not otherwise related) was born on Avondale Road, close to Raby Street, and also baptized in St. Silas even though Byker Parish church was much closer. Subsequently we attended Byker Presbyterian Church on Priory Street on a regular basis. I recall that, much the same as the present time, people chose their religious affiliation because they liked some aspect of a particular minister/priest and congregation. I have a family living off Raby Street and some of the children were baptised at St Michael's and others at St Silas. Wyn In 1881 the Horsman family were at Thompson Street, Byker; and by 1891 they were at 138 Raby St, Byker (where they stayed until at least 1911). Could anyone suggest which church the children may have been baptised at, so that I can check them out when I am up in June. Sue ..
