    1. Re: [NMB] COLQUHOUN of Winlaton, Ryton, Gateshead
    2. There were baptisms in the Ryton Holy Cross but as Winlaton Mill and adjacent areas but would still be in the Ryton parish registers. I am not sure if Winlaton Mill was a satellite chapel but could have been. Others on the board would know this. Ryton Holy Cross baptisms: Rebecca and William both baptised 25 Dec 1805, Rebecca born 18 Sep 1803, William born 9 Nov 1805, 1st daur and 1st son of William Colquhoun of Winlaton, smith, native of this parish, by his wife Isabel Oliver, native of this parish. Winlaton St. Paul was not a parish on its own until 1828. Ryton covered a large area that split off into smaller parishes after 1828. Janis

    2. Jill Forster
    3. Hello Listers I am chasing a family of Colquhoun and variously Colquhound who seem to have lived in Winlaton from the late 1700s. William Colquhoun and his wife Elizabeth Oliver were married in Gateshead in June 1803 and had two children Rebecca and William baptised in Ryton in 1803 and 1805 but they say that they were born Winlaton in the censuses. I cannot find baptisms for William and Elizabeth nor the marriage of daughter Rebecca who had an illegitimate child Sarah baptised in Ryton in 1827 but was recorded as living in Winlaton. Most of the later events of this family are in Gateshead, where Sarah, after having an illegitimate son John, marries firstly Michael Gardner and later James Stewart having 9 children by both husbands before she died in Gateshead in 1891. Is anyone searching for Colquhouns and variants around Winlaton, Ryton and Gateshead? Many thanks Jill Forster

    3. Just an additional comment that I am sure you know - people who lived at Winlaton may well have walked to Whickham, rather than to Ryton for baptisms. <Ryton Holy Cross baptisms: Rebecca and William both baptised 25 Dec 1805, Rebecca born 18 Sep 1803, William born 9 Nov 1805, 1st daur and 1st son of William Colquhoun of Winlaton, smith, native of this parish, by his wife Isabel Oliver, native of this parish. <Winlaton St. Paul was not a parish on its own until 1828. 3. Susan: Watson, originally meaning "the son of Watt", is a VERY common surname throughout the region covered by this List (the old counties of Northumberland and Co Durham). If you don't live within the region, then perhaps you do not fully realise how large it is, both in terms of mileage between places and of population, in historic times as well as in the present. At any time in the last 400 or so years there will have been numerous Watson families in all parts of the region, many of them quite unrelated to any of the others, so to a local person the suggestion that a Watson family from, say, Weardale, might be related to one from, say, Wooler, does sound rather silly - unless, of course, there is already some known evidence which points that way. A more general comment on the same lines is that English patronymics (surnames ending in -son) are far more common in the north than in the south of the country. They have always been found to some extent all over England, of course, and the result of the enhanced mobility brought about by the railway, among other things, has been to "stir the mixture" quite a lot. Hence it is not as obvious nowadays as it might once have been. Nevertheless, those -son surnames do form a much greater proportion of the population in the north of England then they do elsewhere. 1. [NMB] Ancestors of Thomas NEIL
    2. Charles Atkinson
    3. Hello Listers I am seeking help in finding the ancestors of Thomas NEIL who married Isabella KIRKLAND in 1918. The marriage was by Certificate on 29 June 1918 in the Register Office in Tynemouth (Q2 1918 Tynemouth 10b 517). Both the Bride and Groom signed the certificate, indicating that they could write. Witnesses were John KIRKLAND & Mary KIRKLAND, probably the bride's younger siblings. Details from the certificate are: Bride Groom Name Isabella Kirkland Thomas Neil Age 27 34 Condition Spinster Bachelor Occupation Blank Shipyard Labourer Address . 51 Potter Street 13 Hugh Street Willington Quay Wallsend. Father's name Thomas Kirkland Samuel Neil (deceased) Father's Occ. Copper Works Labourer Bricklayer (Journeyman) Clearly, Thomas NEIL was born about 1884 and his father Samuel (bricklayer) would be born around 1850 to 1865 but no convincing match has been found in the 1891 to 1911 censuses for England & Wales or Scotland. Searches of the FreeBMD site and Scotland and Ireland sites have also failed to uncover any matching Neil (Neale, Neill, Niel, Neal) birth. There is a promising-looking census entry for Samuel NEALE, born Plumstead, Norfolk, age 24 in 1881 (RG11/5073/ Folio 27 page 45) and living in Wallsend but this man did not have a son named Thomas as shown by the 1891 census. I wonder if anyone on this List has connections to this Thomas NEIL family or has any information about the birthplace of Thomas. Any assistance would be most welcome. Regards Charles Atkinson.

    1. Re: [NMB] FW: 1859 marriaged cert - What is full age?
    2. Maggie Richie
    3. Dear Brian I do agree with you that something is very strange with the details of both certificates and the census of 1871. However, she married both times away from South Shields and she is on the 1871 census as ELEANOR ROBSON although listed as unmarried. However, I have found many times when sorting through my family trees the census details whether someone was married or not unreliable. Many times couples said they were married when they were not - just living together. Next time I am up in Newcastle I will visit the NDFHS and bring my evidence with me to discuss this in person. It always helps to have a fresh eye on the details which I might have missed. Many thanks for the details about the criminal offences - that I find fascinating and must look through the rest of my family details to find more of these - I know there are a few! Marion As you say, your evidence still doesn't explain why she would claim to be "of full age" when she had nothing to gain. Nor does it explain why, if your scenario is correct, she would claim to be single in 1871 thus labelling herself as an unmarried mother. So she has committed two criminal offences - providing incorect information to a Registrar and to a Census Enumerator - and labelled herself as a fallen woman, without gaining any sort of advantage. Although your evidence sounds convincing, there's something very strange here. Brian -- Brian Pears (Joint List Admin - NORTHUMBRIA Mailing List) .. 3. One method is to look for siblings of Thomas with the same father. Occasionally the parish clerk slips up and adds the mother's name too! Another way is to see if there is a will for John Gregson which might name his wife and children. William Raven and Jane Watson had 3 more children in Allendale that I know of--Sarah 4.11.1683, Anthony and Jacob who drowned at the Holmes in 1705. Sarah Raven appears to have married Joseph Dawson in 1702 in Stanhope.Jane Watson was the eldest daughter of Anthony Watson and Elizabeth Nevin of Huntwell.
