Hello everyone I am trying to narrow down the death of my 3 x great grandmother Jane STOKER. When her husband John STOKER died on 4 August 1838 he was living in Percy Main/Chirton. There is a death for a Jane STOKER registered in Tynemouth in the December quarter of 1842 (25 283). This lady should have been living at the time of the 1841 Census, so I was wondering if anyone can find her or any of the STOKER family in 1841. My Jane would have been 69 or 70 at that time, so could be 65 or 70 on the Census. Jane and John STOKER had at least ten children, so she could have been living with any one of the eight who survived childhood. Robert 1794, Elizabeth 1799, Ann 1801, John 1803, Jane 1806, Mary 1811, Margaret 1813 and Thomas 1816. I plan to order the certificate if it is likely to be the correct lady. Thanks for any help Heather

Geoff Thanks for your interest. Yes that is the right pub and location. We pinpointed it many years ago when revisiting Gateshead using an 1895 Map to navigate... and found ourselves on a flyover. There is a photo in Gateshead Library of the pub in its final days showing it as you describe. In it¹s Victorian heyday it was a prosperous business and hosted many local meetings. We have a photo of James Hird and couple of his barmen standing in front of the pub in 1884 (dated by the election poster in a window) Cemetery road still exists .. it is the north side of the cemetery but the site of the Hird contractor¹s yard is now housing. Newspapers ... yes the collection at Gateshead Library is great we spent many hours working through them (and at Colindale) .. now looking forward to the Gateshead titles appearing online - the originals we handled 25 years ago were fragile. Robin and Margaret: Perhaps you already know that the Brunswick Hotel was at the extreme bottom (east side) of what is now Old Durham Road. It was at the point where the later route south diverged from that (originally Roman) road and took what, before the by-pass was built in the 1970s, was the A1. That is Durham Road, originally a turnpike road, which went through Low Fell and so kept to the bottom of the hill which is Gateshead Fell, instead of going over it, as Old Durham Road did. As I remember it, just before it was demolished in the late 1960s, the Brunswick was a stone-built, whitewashed pub, with back painted quoins and stood at the end of a small terrace which I think was Brunswick Terrace. According to my old (1991) A-Z, Cemetery Road left Old Durham Road at about the same place as the Brunswick Hotel and ran eastwards, along the north side of the huge Gateshead East Cemetery. I'm not sure whether Cemetery Road still exists, though I suspect not. I don't know anything about Richard Robson or Mr Little, but I suspect they were farmers who held their farms on lease, rather than actual land-owners. You may find them in a Northumberland Trades Directory of the period. There were Gateshead newspapers as well as several other Newcastle ones. Most are held in Gateshead Public Library, Local Studies Section. A Gateshead-based paper, such as the Gateshead Observer, might have a fuller story about the event. Hi again Janita I'm grateful for your help but I've just gone through the images of the BT for Allenton (Alwinton and Holystone) for 1770 to 1785 and can't find that baptism. You may need to go back to the OPR. BTs contain errors of transcription, including omissions. On 20/07/2014 12:44 p.m., Heather Punshon via wrote: > I have searched on the Bishops Transcripts and am unable to find the > entry. I had hoped to find the place where the family lived. I am > looking at
Heather: According to the H M Wood transcript of Ryton parish register the baptism was the last of a block of about half a dozen which seem to have taken place on November 1st 1772. Where that happened, the clerk (or Wood) only put the full date against the first one of the block, but I'm pretty sure that all were on the same day. The next "bock" was on November 8th. The address is given as "Winlaton" which, as you will know, was the largest village in the parish, even larger than Ryton itself, thanks to Crowley's workmen and their families. Now for the uninteresting bit, but which I feel obliged to mention. I think you know that I myself am from Ryton. However, my Nicholsons were busy coal mining in darkest Cumbria in the 1770s, so those Ryton people are nothing to do with me! Hello new lister, Have been searching for Joseph William Anderson, born about 1890. I can find the family in Gateshead 1901 census, with mum and dad and brothers. Have found marriage certificate, and death in 1915, war casualty. It is Joseph William's birth and his father, also Joseph Anderson, would like to trace the line. Found Rose Annie mother, nee Chamberlain, born Norfolk. Can anybody help please. Thank you Susan Anderson
Thank you Geoff. However, the baptism is too late given her (confirmed and sourced!) marriage in Eglingham in 1793. I have also checked Edlingham and Ellingham without success. I will have a look at Ellington. Hi Malcolm, Coincidentally I was born and raised in Victoria, BC, but currently live elsewhere. I found the information re Joseph William Anderson on 'Findmypast.com' to which I have a subscription. I find it has useful info on it that one doesn't always find on Ancestry, especially with regard to certain British military matters. Although one can probably find pretty much the same info from the Commonwealth Graves site as long as one's person of interest was killed in action. If he was Canadian then the Library and Archives Canada site is where one would want to search for WW1 ancestors under the Canadian Expeditionary Forces searchable database: http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/first-world-war-1914-1918-cef/Pages/search.aspx which has scanned accession papers available for free. Lots of good info on them. My great-uncle, born 1898 in Low Fell, Gateshead, emigrated to Canada in 1912, enlisted in 1916 as I think he thought it was the only way he would get to see England again. He got shot for his efforts but at least survived the war.
