The earliest Gillespie that I have a definate link to is Elijah Gillespie who was born in Virginia in 1747. His father MIGHT have been Matthew Gillespie. Does this ring any bells? I feel that my family probably came from Ireland because the area that I come from was settled by the Scotch-Irish (I'm a member of that mail list also). I've checked some phone books in the north east of Ireland and there are alot of Gillespies in the Donnegal area. I look forward to hearing from anyone researching this surname. K.
