Thanks to all those who replied re the above. After looking carefully at another document where the same writer appeared to spell the name "Ryan" and considering the several references to Newry, I have decided, at least for the time being, that it is the Townland of Ryan in the Parish of Newry. Now, of course, I have no real idea what a "Townland" is in this context. Is it the equivalent of a "Township" in a County here in North America? Roger Timms
