    3. Hi Joyce, I have a fair amount of info on Blacks in Antrim, esp. North Antrim. I am descended from a Robert BLACK who married Sarah AIKEN in Ahoghill Village near the end of the 18th century. They migrated to South Carolina around 1794 and had several children. About 1803 they pulled out and moved to Western PA. Robert was the brother of John BLACK, who escaped in 1797 to Phildelphia. He was a United Irishman, or accused of being one. John had completed university at Glasgow. He tutored in Greek and other things briefly and then accepted the call of the First Reformed Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh, where he removed. He also served as professor of Greek (I think) at one of the universities there. His daughter recorded their parents as John Black and Margaret McKIBBON of Ahoghill. He is definitely one of the more notable Blacks of Antrim. They had a third sibling, first name unknown, who married the Rev. Samuel WYLIE, who with the Rev. John BLACK and a Rev. McKINNEY were the three leading lights of the Reformed Presbyterian Church at the time. Due to the split in the church over the ownership of slaves, many church members left the south and moved north to non slave states. Many moved to Ohio. My ancestor clearly choose PA to be near his brother. These Blacks were stout Covenantors, though not all Blacks in the area were. Some are Catholic. Probably if your ancestor was not RP, you are not too closely related to my line. Apparently some Blacks arrived in the 1550's with the MacDonnells and are descended from a Captain Lamont, the "Dubh" or Black, from Bute. I've not proven mine are of this line, but they all have black hair. Many folk mistakenly think Covenantors in Ireland all fled from Scotland as a result of the "Killing Times" but this is probably not true. Many were indiginous Scots, pre-Plantation, who as the Presbyterian church emerged as a separate identity from the Church of Ireland after 1651 (or so) maintained a strict inter- pretation of covenanting. Some of their cousins remained with the old faith. In any case, I'm toying with the idea of starting a list to share info on Blacks in Antrim (only). If we put our heads together perhaps we can make progress more quickly and figure out if we are descended from Captain Lamont. Anyone interested in such a project? I'll build a simple webpage unless someone else wnats to, that has the info I have, and we can go from there. Linda Merle
