    1. Will Terminology Questions - circa 1714
    2. Brett F. Woods
    3. I ran across the following document in the "Registry of Deeds, Dublin Abstracts of Wills, Volume I, 1708 to 1745," and I was wondering if someone could answer some questions, not about the specific individuals, but regarding any (or all) of the terms contained in the document. ============================================================ 82 BAIRD, ROBERT, St. Johnston, Co. Donegal, gent. 19 Dec. 1713. Pr‚cis, 1/2 p., 21 June 1714. Son Thomas Baird. Grandson Charles McFarland. Archibald Woods, Transallagh, Co. Donegal, Archibald Coningham, Londonderry, gent, exors. Wm. Cowan, son of John Cowan. Tenants or lessors of houses in Strabane: Patrick Bedlow, Church Street, Andrew Park, Castle Street, Alexander Jameson and Claud Scott. Salt Pans of Monihiben [? Moniluben], and leases in parish of Deserteignie. Salt Pans of [?] Urras, Co. Donegal. Tithes of parish of Killcah, the Glebe and lease of Altakaskin at town end of St. Johntowne, belonging to the Deanery of Raphoe. Premises in Strabane, Co. Tyrone. Freehold in [? Upper] Cloghogle, parish of Donoghedie, B. Strabane, Co. Tyrone. Witnesses: Alexr. Park, Londonderry, innkeeper, John Harvey, Drumore, Co. Donegall, gent., James Cockran, Londonderry, merchant. Memorial witnessed by: Alexr. Richardson, Dublin, gent., David Wilson. 12, 316, 5237 Charles McFarland (seal) ============================================================ The Questions: 1. What, exactly, is this document? (Can somebody help "translate") Who is receiving what? And for what consideration? Why is it termed a "memorial?" 2. What was the age of majority in 1714, that is, when one could sign legally binding contracts. (I'm trying the determine -- if I can -- the youngest age Archibald Woods would have been to be able to participate in whatever this is.) 3. What are "Salt Pans?" I well realize that some of my questions may seem rather fundamental; however I would rather have correct answers, as opposed to those resulting from my idle speculation. Thanks for any help.
