C1792 Back TWShip, Limavady, Derry > I am searching for the birth place and parents of my g. g. g. grandfather, John Hemphill who was born about 1710/20 in Dungiven or Camus in county Londonderry. He went to America about 1735 to 1740, lived in PA and returned to County Londonderry about 1740 to 1746. He married unknown about 1742 to 1748. His son James was born 1749 per war records. He also had a son Nathan who could have been born before but we believe he was born after James, say about 1751. He served in the war in PA and was killed at Brandywine in 1777. Also daughters could have been born during this period. John's first wife died about 1753 to 1754. > John married his second wife, Margaret Ramsey. The assumed 31-year lease that John got then was not renewed in about 1790 so he got this lease about 1759. This property was in the Townland of Back, in the Borough of Limavady in the Co. of Londonderry. Margaret's and John's first son, Robert, was probably born elsewhere but the next son, John, would have been born in Back in 1761. The last son, William, was also born in Back in 1767. We believe there were three daughters. We have a letter from John in Back to his son John in America sending love from his sisters, so there were at least two daughters. John died in Back about 1792. Margaret, at age about 68, came to SC in America in 1796 to 1798. She died there in 1802. > > The question is was there any Hemphills in Dungiven who could have been the father of John in 1710 to 1720? I have been saying John was born in Camus or Streeve Hill both in Limavady but have no proof. I was in Limavady in 1992 working on this. I had been told there were no Hemphills in Dungiven so I did not look there. If anyone can shed a little light on this I surely would appreciate it. > > Best regards, Bob Hemphill, Orangeburg, SC, USA
