Heather I was over there a few months ago. The distance from Prestwick to Troon was a very short distance as I recall, maybe fifteen minutes. There is a hotel, the Marine adjoining the Royal Troon Golf Club overlooking the Irish Sea and another across the street. Try google.com and I'm sure you can get correct names and rates. I did. I checked a UK map and did not see a ferry from Troon to "anywhere" but I do not profess to be an expert. I leave that to the natives. I also visited Ayershire, Turnberry to be exact, but took a circuitous route from Glasgow to Cumbria England and back north so can't help much with direct route. Didn't go north to Belfast, only Dublin so no help. Cars in the roundabout have the right of way. Sure you will enjoy your trip.
