In the birth record of one of his children, my great-great uncle John Kerrigan gives as his place of birth "Dinplaith," Tyrone. I was not able to find it in the list of townlands at the PRONI site. Is anybody familiar with Dinplaith? I am wondering if it could be a part of a townland? or a mis-spelling of another word? If I am correct, this family lived very near the border with Co. Donegal, near Crilly, Templecarn parish. Thanks in advance for any information. Margaret J. -- Margaret Jenkins E-mail: [email protected] OR [email protected]

Hi all I have been lurking for sometime and want to put forward my interests. Henrietta McEVOY/McELVOY/McELROY is my gggrandmother and she arrived in Melbourne on the Commodore Perry in August 1859 whack sailed from Liverpool in May 1959. Her place of birth is apparently County Antrim according to her marriage and death certificate. Her surname was spelt in many ways on her marriage, children's birth and death certificate. She was born c 1841, she could not write, was RC and a housemaid. She parents were Adam McEVOY/McELVOY/McELROY and Anne McDougall. This was an assisted voyage and she was contracted to work for 3 years when she arrived. There seemed to only be women on this voyage. I have done a lookup with the new trial LDS site without any joy. My questions are: Is anyone researching this family? Does anyone know about these assisted passages? How can I do more research about Co Antrim via the Internet? I am searching for information on my Grandfather Willaim James Barr born June 17, 1886 in Five Mile Town, Tyrone Ireland. His parents were William Barr born 1861 and Margaret Lendrum. He had a brother Robert born 1899 and sister Mary Elizabeth born in 1890, and possibly a sister Margaret born 1888. They are listed in the 1901 census living in cavanacork, parish of Clogher, South Tyrone, and they were Presbyterian. My grandfather came to America June 24, 1911 from Londonderry and arrived in Ellis Island, New York. Does anyone have information on any of these people or have any suggestions where I might find more on them, like church records, ect. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Mary Lou

I am searching for the Father (Gearge ?) of JAMES BOTHWELL (15/9/1778-14/3/1855). Wife Anne (Fraser) (14/1/182-14/3/1858) who emigrated to Quebec (Departed "Derryport" 1847) with their 8 children. Their most likely Townland was in Countys: CAV,ARM,DON,MOG; with les pssibility for ANT, FER, MOG, LOU, and TYR. This search has been actively pursued for over 20 yrs., but now with the net I hope to reach drectly, and by word-of-mouth, the Bothwell Families who might still have a record of James or someone who could check a Church Record on a hunch. They attended Mehodist services after coming here.I am assuming James father was George only on the name of their eldest son. If any person reading this happens to know any Bothwells, it would be greatly appreciated if you would kindly let them know about our problem. As James 4GGrandchild, and with 3 1/2 grandchildren of my own, I would dearly like to be able someday to tell them about their true roots in Ireland. I hope that this doesnt sound like a "desperate plea for help", but unfortunately, IT IS. I do not have the means to go to NI myself or I would. ( If I could go Id sit down with a phone directory and call every Bothwell family I could find !) Sooo...in the true spirit of the internet....Im really sucking up to anyone who can spread the word and help out here. Thank you all in advance; waitin n hopin n prayin, Yours truly, J.W. Sorry to bother the whole list but my email to Maryjanes was returned. I do not have the Brandon line except as a collateral. However, they were well known and think there might be a book out about the immigrant (or an article). In Carolina Cradle by Park Rouse, he states that John Brandon came in through PA, went through York Co. and ended up in Rowan Co. and Anson Co., NC. This same book even has a few mentions of the Locke family. Helen Hewitt
These 3 surnames are of families of English extraction who went to No Ireland, then to the American colonies ca 1735. Is anyone else reserching the above names? And can anyone help me to know where I might look to find their co of residence in No. Ireland? Are there any lists of residents of No. Ireland in the 1600's? All help appreciated. I am trying to trace the origins of my great x4 grandfather James Austin He was born in Ireland (I am not sure which County), and later fought for the British during the American Revolution. He settled in Nova Scotia, Canada in the 1780s. The only other helpful piece of information I have is that his family was Presbyterian. Is anyone out there searching the Austins? Do you think you could have a connection to my ancestor? Let me know. Thanks, Andrew Austin

Joe Coastal Carolina USA. Joe, I have been reading your emails concerning the history and naming of the Irish/Scotch/Scotch Irish people. While my main focus is my Patterson family line I am also studying culture, language and clans. In fact, my study started with the confusion over the clan descendancy of the Pattersons. Recently I compared the following ideas: (1) One of the Farquharson genealogies states that the Patersons in the North are descended from Patrick, grandson of Ferquhard from whom the Clan Farquharson take there name. (2) The Paterson's are a sept of Clan MacLaren (Clann MacLabhruinn). It is believed that the members of the clan are descendants of Lorn, son of Fergus MacErc, founder of the kingdom of Dalriada, who arrived in Argyle about 503 AD. The clan seat is in Balquhidder on the eastern end of Loch Voil. The clan slug horn (this is where the term slogan comes from) is Creag un Turic (The Boars Rock) which is a small crag just east and above Balquhidder, this is where the clan gatherings were held. It is also believed that the Clan MacLaurin is also of Clan MacLaren, ancient landowners of the isle of Tiree. (3) Your name Patterson emerged as a Scottish Clan or family in their territory of Ross Shire where they were recorded as a family of great antiquity seated with manor and estates in that shire. Originally the Clan Phaedirean located their home territories on the north side of Loch Fyne. This name was anglicized about the 13th century to Paterson. By the 16th century they had acquired lands to the south in Glasgow and they became prominent businessmen of Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow. (4) For the next two or three centuries the surname of Patterson played an important role in the highlands and in the affairs of Scotland. However, typical of the ancient conflict between highlander and Edinburgh, many ancient highland clans have still not officially been recognized as clans by the Lord Lyon of Scotland. If, in fact, the Patterson Clan, Clan Phaedirean, originated in "Ross Shire" (which I take to mean the northwest lands of Ross); then it makes sense that the clan would become aligned with the Farquharsons and the MacLarens as they moved from the lands of Ross southward through the lands of MacLaren and finally to Glascow and Ayrshire. This is a different idea from the implication that the various "Patterson" groups sprung up randomly as descendants of many Patricks. Does the anglic word Paterson derive from the word gaelic word Phaedirean or does Paterson mean sons of many Patricks (MacPatrick or MacPhadrik)? Thanks for any light you can shed. John Patterson Chesapeake, VA
Lyn, I don't know if this is what you need to know but -- according to "The Oxford Mini-Dictionary of First Names": "Archibald: Norman French: of Germanic origin, composed of the elements 'ercan' = genuine + 'bald' = brave. It has always been largely associated with Scotland, where it was taken, surprisingly enough, as an Anglicized form of 'Gillespie' (Gaelic 'Gille-easpuig', = Servant of the Bishop)" (p.21) Hope this is of some help!
