    1. Re: Obtaining Birth, Death and Marriage Transcripts
    2. Beth Glenfield
    3. Hello from Australia! On the subject of certificates, I thought I should let you know that I have had excellent service through www.genfindit.com. I have obtained many birth, death and marriage transcripts through them. They only charge A$18 per certificate and that is probably about half the cost of obtaining it through the Record Offices. All you have to do is give them the year that relates to which ever transcript you want, the names of the parties involved, and if you can, the reference numbers from the films that are at the local LDS centres. They will send back a wonderful photostat of the transcript within a couple of weeks. This saves a lot of hassle and gives you all the information you need. I recommend them highly! Beth Glenfield

    1. Obtaining Marriage Certificates in ireland
    2. RCDavison
    3. James E. KERR posed some interesting questions in his message. Certainly all of the Marriage Certificates he was after SHOULD be obtainable as they are on or after the crucial year of 1864 when Civil Registration commenced in Ireland. What his message raises in my mind are the 'pros and cons' of researching at either the GRO in Belfast or Dublin. Having spent a lot of time at both places I trust you will bear with me as I impart some knowledge of the practicalities. I would say to anyone coming over to Ireland that they should do their homework so far as it's possible before arrival. When time is tight preparation is invaluable. As all of the Marriages James was after would be on the Indeces for Irish Marriages which are on microfilm at the LDS, the important data is there - Year, Quarter (after 1877) place of Registration, Volume and Page number. The same applies for Birth and Death certificates. However, Belfast GRO cannot supply you with Marriage Certificates. The registers are still held at the local Registration offices throughout N. Ireland. Belfast GRO is certainly the most 'user-friendly' of the two establishments. Dublin has a small search room which soon gets crowded. Where Dublin really scores is that you can get a photocopy of the B., M. or D. register entry there and then. This is a great help when you are unsure that the details you have from the respective Index are for the particular family you're searching. In Belfast, although you would get the opportunity to copy down the B. or D. entry from the Registers, a copy of this entry would cost you £4 STERLING. The photocopy in Dublin costs I£1.50 PUNTS. Let me finish by dealing with the questions James put:- 1. Will they let me search their archives as an alien? - YES, the only requirement is to pay the search fee. Belfast like a pre-booking. For Dublin, you just turn up. 2. Can I expect to get certificates on the same day? - NO for Belfast and Dublin if you want Full Certified Certificates UNLESS they are Priority. You pay £10 for this in Belfast. Don't know what the corresponding charge is in Dublin. But YES for the photocopies in Dublin. 3. Should I try to get Data from the local church where they were probably married? - Not necessary in the case of 1864 and onwards. 4.Is their any logic in applying by mail in advance of applying in person? - If there is no hurry YES. Both places will accept postal applications. There are usually long waits! 5. Are their files readily accessed or do you have to wait for a clerk to find the record volumes that you need?- In Belfast you have personal access to the Index books. Don't forget that although the Birth's are all-Ireland up to 1922, after that it's only for N. Ireland. Death and Marriage Index books in Belfast are only post 1922. With an Assisted Search (£15 per hour) the Clerk brings you the Registers you are interested in. In Dublin you only get to look at the Index books, which are all-Ireland. If you want a copy of an entry you fill out a form, pay your money to the Clerk who then gets you a photocopy of the entry. Hope all that is clear and I haven't bored you all to death! If there's any clarification needed on any of these points please get in touch. Yours aye Robert C Davison Hon. 3. Maybe these will help. As I'd mentioned to Launie privately, this info is from another list I'm on: Here is a book which may be useful: EUROPEAN PASSENGER STEAMSHIP ARRIVALS, MORTON ALLAN DIRECTORY OF, FOR THE YEARS 1890 TO 1930 AT THE PORT OF NEW YORK, AND FOR THE YEARS 1904 TO 1926 AT THE PORTS OF NEW YORK, PHILADELPHIA, BOSTON AND BALTIMORE. This work is a very helpful aid in the use of the indexes of immigrant passenger lists in the National Archives, for they are arranged in the chronological order of the ships' arrival dates, and thereunder by the names of the vessels or the passenger lines, and only then by passengers' surnames. This directory provides a ready means of ascertaining information that will be helpful, for it is arranged by year and steamship company, and thereunder by port of entry, the vessel name, its arrival date and port of embarkation. 268 pp. (1931), repr. Balto., 1993. [GP80] $20.00. I could no longer find an internet site for Genealogy Unlimited - US books (found only their Canadian books site). Perhaps the Canadian site could tell one how to access the US books site for Genealogy Unlimited Books. NEW WORLD IMMIGRANTS. A CONSOLIDATION OF SHIP PASSENGER LISTS AND ASSOCIATED DATA FROM PERIOODICAL LITERATURE. Michael Tepper. Ship passenger lists are the delight of the genealogist for they provide the first record of an ancestor on American soil. Numerous passenger lists have appeared in articles in a wide variety of periodicals. This work is a collection of ninety-seven articles from some fifty perioodicals, mostly totally unknown to the researcher. This collection gives access to material previously difficult to locate for no library in the country can clain to have every issue of every periodical in this compilation. Periodicals drawn on range from the obscure Pennsylvania Dutchman to the scholarly American Genealogist, from bi-weeklies to annuals, and, within the general time frame 1618-1878, the articles identify upwards of 27,500 emigrants, mainly English, Irish, Scottish, German, Swiss, French, Norwegian, and Russian-German. Note: this work does not include articles from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, The new England Historical and Genealogical Register or The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. 2 vols. 568, 702 pp. incexed. Balto, 1988. [GP5755] $25.00. Look for Tepper's Ships of Our Ancestors. About the steamships of the shipping lines: North German Lloyd, White Star, Cunard, Guion, Red Star, Inman, and Hamburg-American. Photos of 900 steamships. Also by Michael Tepper, American Passenger Arrival Records. A Guide to the Records of Immigrants Arriving at American Ports by Sail and Steam. The Genealogy Unlimited - US Books site, last year listed nine pages on books about immigration. Today I could not get to their site. Perhaps someone who knows how to wend through the net better than I can find it and post it. I think that these books could be of tremendous help. If I had a digital camera, I would take pictures of the Scandinavian passengers and crew lists which I found on my copy of the NARA film T715, roll 2663. Many, many Swedish and Norwegian passengers are listed on this film for the dates July 15-July 31, 1919. If I have the time, I will go to the public library, copy the film, and scan it for the list. But, I don't know when I will have the time. If your ancestor came during that time frame, through New York City harbor, this is your film number. ------------ Here are a couple more addresses: Independence Seaport Museum Penn's Landing 211 S. 3. I'm sorry to be posting this question to so many of my lists, but I need serious help here. You all know I've been at a VERY TALL brick wall with these people and I can't stand not finding them on ANY ship lists. I know that they showed up in the Philadelphia area census in 1857. This means that James and Agnes HAD TO SAIL BETWEEN 1853 AND 1857, right??? Every site I go to that has ship lists and dates skip from 1850 to 1860, then I get frustrated. Are there ANY ships that ANYONE knows about that sailed between 1853 and 1857 and where I might find the lists??? Ok, I think I feel a little better now. :D launie reid graffeo (getting ready to deny my reid part, just kidding.)

Don't know what time frame you are searching, but in the Griffith's Valuation (1848-1864) found a few Dennis's in Armagh, Fermanagh and Tyrone. Dennison and Dennisson was found in Armagh, Antrim, Down and Tyrone, with the name most numerous in County Down. In the 1890 Matheson Report of Irish Births, the name Dennison is shown with 6 births in County Armagh. Slan go foill, Margaret (Mairead) >Has anyone heard of the surname Denison in Ulster.
