    1. Blacks in Antrim
    2. linda Merle
    3. Hi Joyce, I have a fair amount of info on Blacks in Antrim, esp. North Antrim. I am descended from a Robert BLACK who married Sarah AIKEN in Ahoghill Village near the end of the 18th century. They migrated to South Carolina around 1794 and had several children. About 1803 they pulled out and moved to Western PA. Robert was the brother of John BLACK, who escaped in 1797 to Phildelphia. He was a United Irishman, or accused of being one. John had completed university at Glasgow. He tutored in Greek and other things briefly and then accepted the call of the First Reformed Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh, where he removed. He also served as professor of Greek (I think) at one of the universities there. His daughter recorded their parents as John Black and Margaret McKIBBON of Ahoghill. He is definitely one of the more notable Blacks of Antrim. They had a third sibling, first name unknown, who married the Rev. Samuel WYLIE, who with the Rev. John BLACK and a Rev. McKINNEY were the three leading lights of the Reformed Presbyterian Church at the time. Due to the split in the church over the ownership of slaves, many church members left the south and moved north to non slave states. Many moved to Ohio. My ancestor clearly choose PA to be near his brother. These Blacks were stout Covenantors, though not all Blacks in the area were. Some are Catholic. Probably if your ancestor was not RP, you are not too closely related to my line. Apparently some Blacks arrived in the 1550's with the MacDonnells and are descended from a Captain Lamont, the "Dubh" or Black, from Bute. I've not proven mine are of this line, but they all have black hair. Many folk mistakenly think Covenantors in Ireland all fled from Scotland as a result of the "Killing Times" but this is probably not true. Many were indiginous Scots, pre-Plantation, who as the Presbyterian church emerged as a separate identity from the Church of Ireland after 1651 (or so) maintained a strict inter- pretation of covenanting. Some of their cousins remained with the old faith. In any case, I'm toying with the idea of starting a list to share info on Blacks in Antrim (only). If we put our heads together perhaps we can make progress more quickly and figure out if we are descended from Captain Lamont. Anyone interested in such a project? I'll build a simple webpage unless someone else wnats to, that has the info I have, and we can go from there. Linda Merle

The Ely papers, as the quantity of reference numbers cited above would suggest, are not one but a host of scattered deposits in PRONI, amounting in total to c.1,550 documents, covering the period 1630-1928 and documenting the estates, mainly in Cos Fermanagh, Wexford and Dublin, the business affairs and the frequent accessions of peerage honours of the Loftus family, from 1751 Barons and Viscounts Loftus and Earls and Marquesses of Ely. 3. > > >If someone could tell me who would have been "Lord Loftus Tottenham" that > >my ancestor was supposedly working for around 1836, I would appreciate it. > > >Yours, > >Dora Smith The question is, Dora, not whether someone can tell you who Lord Loftus Tottenham was, but how long it will take you to wade through all the material about his family, which is very well documented. You are likely to be awash with material, though you will it seems have to pay someone to get it for you. I went to the PRONI site (Public Records Office of Northern Ireland) and did a site search for Tottenham for you. Here are 3 card indexes I transcribed. But then I got tired of transcribing stuff, so what follows is the list of card indexes that the search threw up. I am sure you would get more if you kept looking.Unfortunately the only material about this family that is online seems to be card indexes, so the material is likely to have to be looked at manually PUBLIC RECORD OFFICE of NORTHERN IRELAND Prominent Persons Index Card no.:2/1230 Surname:Tottenham Forename(s):Robert Loftus Surname variations: Pre-title: Title(s): Dates:1819 - 1893 Description: Relevant PRONI references:D/962 Card no.:H/70 Surname:Loftus Forename(s):Robert Ponsonby Tottenham Surname variations: Pre-title: Title(s): Dates:1773 - 1850 Description: Relevant PRONI references:T/580 {p 79}, D/627/94, D/1108/B/39-42 Card no.:2/1231 Surname:Tottenham Forename(s):Charles Surname variations: Pre-title: Title(s):1st Marquess of Ely Dates:1738 - 1806 Description: Relevant PRONI references: D/580{114,312,317,366,420,426,448,460,462, 46}, D/436,T/755/2/253, D/1108/B{4-7,22,38}, T/1041/27 100% Tottenham, Robert Loftus (summary) 100% Loftus, Robert Ponsonby Tottenham (summary) 100% Tottenham, Arthur Loftus (summary) 100% Tottenham, Charles (summary) 100% Tottenham, Edward (summary) 100% Loftus, Charles Tottenham, 1st Marquess of Ely (summary) 100% Tottenham, Charles Henry (summary) 98% Tottenham, Earls of Ely (summary) 98% Loftus, Nicholas, 1st Viscount Loftus (summary) 98% Loftus, Henry (summary) 98% Loftus (summary) 98% Loftus, Edward (summary) 98% Tottenham, Charles, 1st Marquess of Ely (summary) 98% Loftus, Jane (summary) 98% Loftus, Frances (summary) 98% Loftus, Adam (summary) 98% Loftus, Nicholas, 2nd Baronet (summary) 98% Loftus, William (summary) 98% Loftus, Henry, 3rd Earl of Ely (summary) 98% Loftus, Nicholas (summary) Another place to look is in Burke's Peerage, which will have an entry for the Marquesses of Ely. There are several Frackleton/Freckleton listings as well. Good luck. Here's an excerpt from "Who' Who, 1931", published by A. & C. Black Limited, 4, 5 & 6 Soho Square, London, W1. "TOTTENHAM, Alexander Robert Loftus; C.I.E. 1925; I.C.S.; Member Central Board of Revenue, and Joint Secretary, Finance Department, Government of India, since 1923; b. 31 July 1873; s. of late Capt. As well, "Crockford's Clerical Directory 1959-60", Bishops of Clogher, says: "1822 Robert Ponsonby Tottenham Loftus 1850. United to Armagh 1850-86". Good luck. Bill Swinarton, Scarborough, Ontario.

In 1831 they arrived in Philadelphia, PA, USA, where Archibald was naturalized in 1836. Later the family started toward the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, USA with stops in Maryland and Jefferson Co., VA, now West Virginia. I'd like to find ancestors of Archie and Mary in Northern Ireland if I can. Will share information about their life in Frederick County, Virginia, where 9 more children were born and raised and where Archie bought a fam and live until he was 81 years old.Joyce

    3. James McCanny of the book on Fermanagh writers apparently uses an alias on his e-mail. He is Seamus MacAnnaidh. His book on Fermanagh writers is Fermanagh Books, Writers and Newspapers of the Nineteenth Century. I did correctly deduce that he lives in Enniskillen, Fermanagh. Someone in Kent, England, pieced this together, so the book may not be too obscure in Britain. The lookup I would appreciate it if someone does if they come across the book (I posted yesterday) is Henry Nathaniel Lowe, b I have 1837 but amnot sure it's correct, died 1905 I'm not sure where, was a newspaper editor in Fermanagh County, probably Enniskillen or Tempo, made and lost alot of money and may have been forced to leave Ireland for reasons that had something no matter how remote to do with his being a Mason. I want to know what information is in the book about his life, his personality and character, and his background, origins, and family. Thanks alot. Yours, Dora Smith

    2. I'm brand new to the list and am hoping someone can help me. I'm looking for any information on a John Whitten who died in Acton, Armagh County in 1782. He was married to Jane Jamison (b. 1755, d. 1835) and they had 4 children Elizabeth, Ester, John and Samuel. The son John also had a son named John (b. 1849) who married Margaret Baggs and came to America about 1818. Any information on the family, the area or other things I should be looking for to gather clues about these folks would be most appreciated. Thanks, Lisa

    1. "Lord Loftus Tottenham" query
    2. Dora Smith
    3. With access to a different library at the university today, I find (in a book) that the Tottenham who was a famous member of the Irish Parliament was Charles Tottenham, and he lived from 1685 to 1758. This is far too early for my 3X great grandfather to have worked for him. My 3X great grandfather was secretary or agent for Lord Loftus Tottenham around 1836 to possibly as late as 1850, when he married someone he met while on business for Lord Tottenham. But Charles Tottenham must be an ancestor of the Lord Loftus Tottenham my ancestor is really said to have worked for. Charles Tottenham, by his second wife Elizabeth, daughter of Nicholas Loftus, and sister and co-heir of Henry Loftus, earl of Ely, etc., had Charles Tottenham (afterwards Loftus) (1738-1806), who in connection with the negotiations preceding the Act of Union was [in 1800] created Marquis of Ely...and Viscount Loftus and Earl of Ely. He assumed the name of Luftus in 1783, and [in 1801] was created Baron Loftus of Long Loftus in the United Kingdom..." This is also too early to have been the individual my ancestor worked for. It appears from the data bases as well as teh above that the Tottenhams were a large family of gentry and quite a number of them used the middle name Loftus, I don't know about first name. If someone could tell me who would have been "Lord Loftus Tottenham" that my ancestor was supposedly working for around 1836, I would appreciate it. Yours, Dora Smith

    1. Henry N Lowe, news editor, Fermanagh
    2. Dora Smith
    3. I am looking for information on my 2X great grandfather, Henry Nathaniel Lowe, b supposedly 1837, married 1862 in Tempo, Fermanagh County, died in 1905 and I'm not sure if he died in New York or Canada having been forced to leave the country, or is buried in the Enniskillen Church of England graveyard with his wife (d 1881) and two children. I understand he was a newspaper editor in Fermanagh County, and that there is something about him in a newly published book on Fermanagh authors by James McCanny. This must be one obscure, not to mention British, publisher as the reference librarian and I could not find the book or James McCanny, anywhere. I would appreciate a lookup in it if anyone comes across it. But family stories about the man include that he made alot of money and then lost it, "and was robbed of it" according to his son, meaning probably he felt that he'd been cheated or swindled somehow, and he may have been "run out of Ireland for being a Mason". I am sure that is hardly the whole story of whatever happened if it did. Henry Lowe's father allegedly worked for a Lord Loftus Tottenham or Tottentram who was a prominent member of I think the Irish Parliament, and the whole family were Masons and members of the Church of England and had aristocratic pretensions. It is possible he got embroiled in something. It certainly doesn't sound like he led a tame newspaper editor's life. If he got embroiled of something of that magnitutde, perhaps people in Ireland may be able to find something about it. If anyone is in any Irish libary where informaiton like that would be, I would greatly appreciate a lookup. Thanks much, Yours, Dora Smith

    2. Dora Smith
    3. I need to know who was "Lord Loftus Tottenham" or "Tottentram" who my 3X great grandfather allegedly worked for in Ireland in the early to mid 19th century. Some time ago, I tracked down who he was, tracked down his current heir, and talked to the man; for some reason, tonight in all the university biographical data bases as well as in Alta Vista and Google searches of the Web I cannot verify that the man existed. Previously, I learned that he was a prominent member of the Irish Parliament. Could someone please look him up for me, tell me where he lived and where he worked/ hung out, and when my ancestor would have been working for him if indeed he did (the descendant could not confirm it). I have the name transcribed both ways, and that is an easy error to make. But it appears that Tottenham is the name of a family of politically active Irish gentry, and Tottentram does not exist. It is possible that Loftus was the man's middle name which he went by. Thanks much. Yours, Dora Smith
