Greetings from sunny Brisbane Australia..... I am clutching at straws here.... My grandmothers' father, according to my father, was a 'big 'Orange Man' from Ireland. I would 'assume' (never a good thing, I know) that he was from Northern Ireland. His name was John Sidney DYER He was known as 'Jack'. His father was Joseph DYER I have a copy of John Sidney DYER's marriage certificate. He was married on 24 July 1887, in ChristChurch in the Parish of Kensington, London, to Eliza HAWES, an English girl. John Sidney Dyer was 23 years old when married, making him born approximately 1864. On the marriage certificate both John and his father were labourers. This is EVERYTHING I know about this man. I looked for him in 1881 on the English census and could not find a John DYER of the appropriate age, born in Ireland, father Joseph. I have come to the conclusion that in 1881 he was probably still in Ireland. Does anyone have ANY idea where I might start to look for him in Ireland? In desperation - I am all yours...... I'm seeking info on William Fletcher born 1725, and his probable brother,Thomas, born 1738,somewhere in Co.Londonderry or possibly in Co.Antrim or Co.Tyrone. They probably were born in the Barony of Kenaght or tyhe Barony of Loughinsholin. Both emigrated to Nova Scotia and were there with wives by 1760 or so. William married Elener__________. born 1741 in Co. Londonderry and Thomas married Jean (Jane) Vance, dau. of John and Mary(Kelly)Vance.William and Thomas may have been descendants of Patrick ffletcher, who was listed under Sir Thomas Phillips in the 1630 Co. Hello, I am searching for the names of the parents and siblings of JAMES A HUTCHISON born about 1804 in Belfast, Ireland. JAMES married ELIZABETH in Belfast. Elizabeth's last name and parents unknown. James and Elizabeth had three children. JOHN born 1834 in Belfast, JAMES AUGUSTUS Jr., born 1838 in Belfast, and ALEXANDER born about 1845 in Belfast. JAMES A. HUTCHISON, Sr. and his family emigrated from Ireland around 1852. They were listed as passengers on board the ship MARY HALE of Portsmouth at Liverpool. I would appreciate any information that any of you can give me on these ancestors. Thanking you in advance. Gloria Gloria Hutchison-McFadden-Goldman
Hi Eileen Thanks for your reply to my posting looking for the Nesbitt book. My great-great-grandmother was Margaret Nesbitt married to John Conboy. According to Glenn Lockwood's book "Beckwith",Thomas Armstrong and John Conboy arrived in Canada together aboard the PONSOBY in Dec. 1821. Both men were granted lots in Franktown by the Perth Military Depot. The book "Commemorative Biographical Record of the County of Lambton" contains records of families who moved from Lanark Co. to Lambton Co. Among them was John Nesbitt Jr.,son of John Nesbitt, brother of Margaret and Elizabeth, who moved to Lambton Co. in 1854. The book states that John Srs. parents were William Nesbitt and Mary Henderson from Co. Down, Ireland, and that William came to Canada in the early 1820s with 4 of his children - Betsy(Elizabeth), Margaret, John , and George after Mary died Records from St.James's Anglican Church in Carleton Place- Baptisms-William Conboy, son of John and Margaret Conboy was baptised, sponsors-William Conboy and Elizabeth Armstrong, also, James Armstrong, son of Thomas and Elizabeth was baptised -sponsors John and Margaret Conboy. The Armstrongs and Conboys lived on the same concession in Beckwith. I would be interested in any other information you have about the Armstrong family, I don't know much else about them. Thanks again for your help. Sorry to post to the list, but I have been unable to get through to you. Doreen
I am looking for ODonnells in Belfast Northern Ireland. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of information to go on. Here's what I do know. My great grandmother was Sarah ODonnell, born in 1878 in Belfast. She emigrated with her brother James (b. ?) and sister, Nellie (b. ?) (Helen) in approximately 1892-1894 to the Boston area of Massachusetts. The other siblings, Francis ODonnell and Mary ODonnell remained in Belfast. Below is all the information I have on these ODonnells. Sarah ODonnell was born 1878 in Belfast. She emigrated to the U.S. between 1892-1894. She married Charles N. Gaudette somewhere around 1898-1900. They had five children: Hildred Gaudette (married OConnor) (b. 1900 in Lynn Massachusetts, d. 1957 in Brookline Mass.) John Gaudette (b. 1902 in Lynn Massachusetts, d. Feb. 1970 Pennsylvania) Frances Gaudette (married McKenna) (b. 1908 in Lynn Mass. d. ?) Pauline Gaudette (married Dineen) (my grandmother) (b. 1910 Milton New Hampshire) Charles Gaudette (b. 1915 Milton New Hampshire d. ?) Charles N. Gaudette left the family in 1916, or possibly Sarah left him. Between 1916 and 1920 she married a Peter Tiermann and had a child by him, Peter M. Teirmann. In 1920 they were living in Pennsylvania. They moved to the Brookline Mass. area sometime in the mid 1920's. Sarah died in Boston in Dec. 1929. James ODonnell (Jim) (b. ? d. ?) may have had two daughters. Helen (Nellie) ODonnell (b. ? d. ?) had several children and may have lived in the Brighton area of Boston. Francis ODonnell (b. ? d. ?, died possibly in 1930's/1940's) Allegedly owned a shipyard in Belfast (family story), never married, never had children. When he died (after Sarah) he willed everything to his siblings or their children. This family story is at odds with the information that Sarah, James and Nellie spoke of "having to go to work" when they arrived in the U.S. Either the shipyard wasn't doing so well, if there was one or someone in the ODonnell family in the U.S. came into some money and made up the story about Uncle Francis to explain it. Given what I know so far, I'd put my money on the latter versus the former. I'm not even sure there was a shipyard named ODonnell in Belfast. Does anyone know if there was one? Mary ODonnell (b. ? d. ?) I have no other information on her. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm at a total loss on how to pursue this line. It has been difficult to pick through the "stories" versus the "facts". This has been complicated by the fact that the Gaudette children (Sarah's children) were placed in foster care between 1916 and 1917 in Massachusetts. I stumbled on to this fact which had been unknown to anyone in my family. I would love to find out if there are in fact any of these ODonnells in Belfast Northern Ireland and if there in fact was an ODonnell shipyard. I have placed all of the information I do have on my web page The Dineen Family Homepage. Again any assistance would be appreciated. Hi Again Everyone, I have transcribed the baptismal records from the RC Parish of Lower Killevy, Feb. 1835 - Dec. 1850, the marriage records from Lower Killevy, Feb. 1835 - Dec. 1850, and the Baptismal records for Upper Killevy, Oct. 1832 - Aor. 1845 (so far), for the surnames in my family, including Rice. I would be glad to share my files with anyone who thinks they could use them. Just email me and tell me what format you need them in, Excel 95, Excel 97, or text. My gr gr grandfather was Bernard C. Hi Everyone, I am researching the Rices of the parish of Lower Killevy, Co. Armagh. My gr gr grandfather, Bernard Rice was born Sept. 4, 1837 in the RC parish of Lower Killevy. His parents were John Rice and Ann Burns (Byrne or Byrnes). He had at least two brothers and three sisters: James b. 1831 Mary Ann b. ? Bridget b. Jan. 31, 1840 Felix b. June 23, 1842 Catharine b. Apr. 16, 1845. The family apparently left Lower Killevy after Catharine's birth, that is, after 1845, and they appear in New Olreans around 1853 or so. The mother Ann Rice is there with James, Mary Ann, Bernard, and Felix. Don't know what happened to the other two sisters or their father. I have transcribed the baptismal records from the RC Parish of Lower Killevy, Feb. 1835 - Dec. 1850, the marriage records from Lower Killevy, Feb. 1835 - Dec. 1850, and the Baptismal records for Upper Killevy, Oct. 1832 - Aor. 1845 (so far), for the surnames in my family, including Rice. To you Irelanders, My husband and I will be visiting in your country next week. We will be staying in Mohill on the 9th and 10th, then traveling after that. Greetings! I am new to these lists, as I see many others are, and have only just begun my family genealogy a few years ago. I was very excited to find these newsletters and all of you very helpful people. Here is what I am after: I am searching for information on my ggggrandfather, John S. HASTINGS, 24 Jun 1824 - 1887, and his mother, father and seven brothers and sisters who came to New York in the US from Co. Fermanagh in the late 1820s, early 1830s. Three of his brothers were Hugh John Hastings, 20 Aug 1820 - 12 Sep 1883, Thomas Hastings and Richard Hastings. I do not have the names of their mother and father, nor the sisters and am not sure what year they came over. I do know that the father came over first. Most of the family worked in the newspaper industry in the US. John S. Hastings was also a member of the United Irishmen of America. Where would be a good source of information for that organization? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Best wishes, Matt Hartigan Safety Harbor, Florida, USA
Hi Listers Does anyone have access to the book "History of the Family of Nisbet or Nesbitt in Scotland and Ireland" Torquay, privately published? If these cards were found, they would be filmed after the Z's of the locality they belonged to. The alphabetical arrangement of cards for Van Buren County, Arkansas (G.S. film no. 1530648) is out of sequence. The letters K, L and M repeat themselves in several places. "On May 18, 1917 the Selective Service Act was passed authorizing the President to increase temporarily the military establishment of the United States. The Selective Service System, under the office of the Provost Marshal General, was responsible for the process of selecting men for induction into the military service, from the initial registration to the actual delivery of men to military training camps"--Introd. "Local boards were established for each county or similar subdivision in each state, and for each 30,000 persons (approximately) in each city or county with a population over 30,000. The local boards were charged with the registration, determination of order and serial numbers, classification, call and entrainment of draftees"--Introd. "During World War I there were three registrations. The first, on June 5, 1917, was for all men between the ages of 21 and 31. The second, on June 5, 1918, registered those who attained age 21 after June 5, 1917. (A supplemental registration was held on August 24, 1918 for those becoming 21 years old after June 5, 1918. This was included in the second registration.) The third registration was held on September 12, 1918 for men age 18 through 45"--Introd. This is the cover record for an analytic set. Draft registration cards are also listed separately under each state or territory of the United States. See entry in the Locality Catalog under: (State) - Military records - World War, 1914-1918. In the Author/Title catalog, see entry under: United States. Selective Service System. (State), World War I Selective Service System draft registration cards, 1917-1918. "The information included on each registration differs somewhat but the general information shown includes order and serial numbers (assigned by the Selective Service System), full name, date and place of birth, race, citizenship, occupation, personal description, and signature"--Introd. "The registration cards consist of approximately 24,000,000 cards of men who registered for the draft, (about 23% of the population in 1918). It is important to note that not all of the men who registered for the draft actually served in the military and not all men who served in the military registered for the draft. Moreover, these are not military service records. They end when an individual reports to the army training camp. They contain no information about an individual's military service"--Introd. "The records are arranged alphabetically by state, followed by Puerto Rico; thereunder alphabetically by county or city (except for Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island which are alphabetically by the names of registrants:--Introd. The title boards on the films for Rhode Island are incorrect. "In rural areas one should be able to find a registant's card knowing his name and the county in which he registered. In large cities and in some larger counties the search could be more difficult. In New York City, for instance, there were 189 local boards"--Introd. For larger cities or counties, there may be many draft boards within the same geographic area. Any reference to a Donnell family ca 1710-1715 will be appreciated. My Thomas Donnell, a Presbyterian, was b "in Ireland" 1710-1715 and emigrated to America 1737. Was there actually a Donnell surname there, then, or was the family necessarily MacDonnell or McDonnell. Because he was Presbyterian in America, am I correct in assuming he would not have been an O'Donnell in Ireland? Any comment will be appreciated. Dorothy Donnell Steers < [email protected] >
