There is a town called Castleblayney in county Monaghan, Baroney of Cremore, Parish of Muckno, poor law union of Castleblayney. (1851) It is on the N2 about 14 miles SW of Monaghan, close to the border of Armagh. Don Boyle Brantford
I am looking for information on Blaney family. Is there a CastleBlayney or Blaney? My great great grandfather Thomas Blaney came over to Canada with his brother William(maybe James). Thomas was born in 1844. His father's name was John and his mother was Cecilia. I have no idea where they came from but I know it was Ireland and tales have been told to me of this Castle Blaney(I know now it is just a place). If anyone has any information to help my search. Are there censuses ( 1851 or before ). How do I proceed? Many thanks. Sandra Atkinson Orillia, On. Canada
Hi Listers, My Great Great Grandfather William Adams, born in Coleraine, Ireland on Feb 6th 1825 , joined the the 65th Regiment ( Private 2512), known as the "Royal Tigers" on Dec 15th 1845 He sailed with the 65th to New South Wales from Woolwich, England on the vessel "Java" on May 18th 1846 and then on to New Zealand wher he took his discharge in August 1850 and settled. His fathers name was David Adams, occupation Tanner, and his mother Ann Roberts. Research that may possible tie in centres around a David Adams who in 1831 resided on the "Commons" area of Coleraine. This could be the street known today as Long Common. This David was married and apparently had six children as there were 5 males and 3 females living in the house. He apparently owned house no's 457 and 458 with the second house listed as "vacant". He was listed as a Presbtyerian. Another researcher with whom I am corresponding also shares a GG Grandfather named David Adams of Coleraine and we suspect may be the same one. His Great Great Grandfather John Adams married a Jane Allen ( father William a weaver of Wattstown townlands) on 17 Jan 1846 and two of the witnesses were named John Dunlop and John McAlees. The church was the the United Church of England and Ireland. This John moved to Scotland sometime between 1855 and 1859. Common male forenames that are in both families are William, John, Alexander, James, Thomas, Elizabeth. Please foregive if this message overlaps, but I thought it would be less time consuming for me to post to all lists that might help in my search. I am hoping that someone will recognize part or all of this O'Neil family. My g-g-g grandfather was Charles O'Neil. He appears in Quebec beginning in 1837 with no information on where he came from. My task to is to trace him back to Ireland (what else?). The following is all the information I have been able to find in 2 years of searching (only had his name and my g-g-grandmother's name when I started). My grandfather says that the family originated in Co. Tyrone (most info below does not really apply to Co. Tyrone, but I'd type this once). Unfortunately I have no dates, so don't know if Charles came over or his parents, etc. Charles O'Neil was married to Hermine Sigmun (Hermine's maiden name shows up with several spellings - Sigmun, Sigmund, Sigmen, Sickman, Segin, Seguin, Segoin). I don't know where she came from. Was she Irish, English, or French? (There is no record of their marriage in Quebec.) I am beginning to think that she was French, if so did Charles go from Ireland to France to Quebec?. The Children of Charles and Hermine O'Neil were: Hurcule (Hercule) O'Neil married Zoe Dupre, 31 August 1846 at St-Pierre-de-Sorel, Richelieu, Quebec (this marriage is documented by the marriage record from Sorel and by records (Batch #7222260, Sheet #92) in the Family History Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. 1.. Sophie O'Neil - she shows up in Quebec census records, but nowhere else so far. 2.. Marie O'Neil married Francois-Xavier Tousignant in St-Barthelemy, Quebec, 7 August 1867 Children of Marie O'Neil and Francois-Xavier Tousignant: Marie Julie Hermine born and baptized 25 May 1868 in St-Barthelemy, Quebec. She married Jean-Baptiste Tremblay 15 October 1900 in Notre-Dame of Hull. Charles born about 1869 (he was 11 years old in the census of 1880 in Woonsocket, Rhode Island). Charles married Alphonsine Pariseau 4 July 1898. Marie (Mary) born about 1872 (8 years at the 1880 Woonsocket, Rhode Island, census. Louis born 1879 (1 year at the 1880 Woonsocket, Rhode Island, census) (The above information on Marie O'Neil and Francois-Xavier Tousignant was received from Andre Tousignant 3 April 2000 - I have not researched this myself, but I accepting the info as correct.) NOTE: Marie was living in Hull, Quebec, in 1910 at the time of her sister Claire's death, this according to Claire's obituary 4. Claire O'Neil born 1837 (unknown place). She married Zacharie Jacques 20 August 1859 in St-Barthelemy, Quebec (Claire and Zacharie are my great-great grandparents). For more information on ancestors and descendants of Zacharie Jacques and Claire O'Neil visit my web pages for these families (http://www.100megsfree2.com/jjscherr/jacques/welcome.htm -Descendants of Nicholas Jacques and Marie Soyer. Notes on Charles O'Neil:- he was present at the wedding of his daughter Claire to Zacharie Jacques. He appears on the Quebec census for St-Barthelimi Parish, Qjuebec of 1861 with Hermine (his wife) and daughters Marie and Sophie. Charles was also present at the wedding of Marie and Francois-Xavier Tousignant in 1867. Charles was present and stood as godfather to their daughter Marie Julie Hermine in 1868. (This information was obtained from copies of baptism, and marriage records obtain from the archives in Quebec.) During my researches I have received the following information on 2 Charles O'Neils from the National Archives of Canada (are either of these two ours?): 1. "Extract from Ordnance Survey Documents, Royal Irish Academy, Dublin. County Londonderry, Parish of Ballinasoreen, Section III, Page 21 >From a list of The Number of Persons That have Emigrated to America from The Under Mentioned Townlands, During The Years 1834 & 1835, It will show The Name, Age & Religion, of Each Person, Townlands From Whence Gone, & Ports For which Emigrated, as Enumerated, From 29th Sept. to 17th Oct. 1836." Information obtained from Henrey Gillespie, Hugh Bradley, & Others, Finished 17th Oct. 1836: Emigration 1834 Charles O'Neil Age 24 Townland: Desert Ports: New York Religion: R.C. 2. Another Record from the National Archives of Canada referencing a Charles O'Neil. "A Census of the population of the Seigniories of Foucault, Noyan and Sabrevois, taken... By Samuel L. Welch -- completed on the 4th day of December 1830." found amongst miscellaneous records from the Provincial Secretary's Office, Lower Canada (RG4, B77). The census return was in the form of a roll, listing heads of each household and the members of males and females within the household, arranged by seigniory. After restoration treatment the document was left in 12 segments for ease of handling. (The original roll format had been achieved by fastening 12 sheets together.) The last segment bears a certificate signed by the enumerator and is endorsed as being addressed to Lord Aylmer, the Governor of Lower Canada. #393 O'Neil, Charles Year of Record: 1830 Males: 3 Females: 4 # in Household: 7 Comments: Living in Seigniory of Noyan Source: Québec and Lower Canada Census fragments: Foucault, Noyan & Sabrevois References: National Archives of Canada, Microfilm Reel No. H-1758 (RG4B77), page 9 Any thoughts appreciated. I am hoping that someone else is looking for the same family as I. My ggggrandfather, SAMUEL SCOTT, emigrated to Newburgh NY in 1850 from Ireland. He was married to Mary WAKESHAW? (not sure of the spelling of this surname). I believe that Mary did not make the trip over as I have not found here anywhere. Samuel's son, JAMES A.SCOTT, made the trip with him. He was born abt. 1831 in Ireland and was married to Margaret Jane MOORE. Don't know if he married her in Ireland or in NY. Margaret was Irish born also. Looking for anyone that might have a connection with this family. Margaret's parents names may have been George and Sarah MOORE as they seemed to follow the Irish naming tradition as they had 5 children: Samuel, Mary, George, Sarah and James A., Jr. They were Church of Ireland as far as religion goes and they were teamsters over in NY so they may have did the same in Ireland. I hope someone knows of this family as I am hitting a brick wall in the states. Thanks. Robin Galage Co. Tipperary: VIKERS, SHERRY, KIRWAN Co. Tyrone: COOPER Co. Upon visiting an unearthed relly she mentioned that our Elizabeth King Macmillan was a beautifull crocheter. A skill she was taught by the nuns when she was in the orphanage!! Before she went to live with her Aunt. Now, question is would there have been any such orphanage near Coleraine in the 1870's and if so would they have kept lists of the children in their care. Could SKS please let me know how I should attack this bit of information. Yours in searching Robyn Watson
Greetings, Please forgive the duplication - But I am requesting help from my NI lists in hopes that someone can answer this question - My original US ancestor - James DEZELL (spelling comes from the ship's passenger list, land bounty upon arrival, later sale of land) - Left Ireland (probably Belfast - but some possibility - Londonderry) on the brig - Lord Dungannon in 1767 and arrived in Charleston, SC in 1768 - Here is my problem - When researching Ireland in 1600-1700's - There is no record of DEZELL (except on the 1796 Irish Flax Growers Record - Robert DEZELL - Monaghan Co. Ematris Parish) - Therefore I can only conclude that DEZELL must have been spelled differently - Question - What could be the Irish form/spelling of DEZELL? I have tried just about every spelling that I can come up with - It is DEZELL in England - But I do not find the name until the middle 1800's - Also later DEZELLs coming to NA (NY and CAN) all state they are from Ireland and spell it DEZELL. Any help would be much appreciated. James Dezell GDEZELL65@aol.com
I am in the process of compiling a directory of 'Irish Family History on the Web', as a companion volume for my 'Family History on the Web: a directory for England & Wales' (which is now in its 3rd printing!) The web, as we all know, can be a valuable resource for genealogists, but it can also be very frustrating, with very poor search engines throwing up thousands of irrelevant references, badly designed gateways, and sometimes great difficulty in finding the particular site required. I hope that my directory will enable users to go directly to the sites they need. I have trawled through numerous gateways and link pages to identify all of the major and many of the less important sites; however, it is likely that subscribers to this list will know of sites that I may have missed - particularly those that are not listed on any search engine or gateway. I would be grateful for any information on such sites, bearing in mind that I will not be listing sites devoted to specific families/surnames. And if anyone would like a copy when the book is published, let me know that too.
